Coming in February. Bringing folks that have never been to Z. Would like to take them to Patzcuaro. Anyone traveled that way recently? Wanting to rent A car, maybe go see the Monarch butterflies. Thanks.

Always surprised to see how little things have changed in
Morelia when I see Ava Gardner, Tyrone Power, Errol Flynn and
Eddie Albert whooping it up down there in the 1956 movie version of
The Sun Also Rises.

We will likely be going in the first week of December. I will try to remember to post about how the roads are. I have heard that there are still many potholes as a result of this past rainy season and lack of proper maintenance. We shall see.

To my knowledge there isn't a monarch overwintering site you can get anywhere close to in a vehicle.

If you want to visit El Rosario Biosfera, you can park in the village of Ocampo. You can either ride horses part way up the mountain and hike the rest of the way, or you can hike the entire way. At 10,500 feet elevation, the air is "thin" so give yourselves time to acclimate.

Delighted to hear the migration population is looking good this year!

Seeing all those Monarch butterflies will be something you will never forget it gets me excited just thinking back to our trip there.

Or you could take a bus to Morelia which are very comfortable and leave the driving to someone else. (not sure if you have to vaxed to get on one) Stay over night and have the hotel arrange for a van to pick you up and take you out to see the Monarchs.

Yes the hike up the mountain is strenuous in the thin air 3 out of 4 of us made it up to the top the 4th had spent too much time riding the chair at her desk prior to our trip a few years ago, today she would be the first one up the hill. You can also pay for a horse ride up and walk down.

As we approached the monarch overwintering site, our guide told us to be quiet so we wouldn't disturb them. All we could hear was the flapping of wings as the sun warmed them and they took flight. We were in their world and it was like entering a holy place.

For me, the emotional impact of that moment was overwhelming and almost physical. I'm not a weepy person but I burst into tears at the sheer beauty of those delicate, determined little creatures who travel 3,000 miles, year after year, to that exact spot.

YES. Stay at the Soledad. The finest hotel I have ever stayed in. Ask to see some suites. The restaurant is great also.

Yes, you recommended that place previously which is why I suggested using the SEARCH feature so we don't simply repeat ourselves here, because if we keep repeating everything then there's no point in me saving old posts, is there? ;-)

Ha ha ha ha! I could hear your heals click as you snapped to attention and saluted.

You don't have to call me sir, I'm just a working man. B-)

We stayed at Soledad in Dec 2019 on Helene's recommendation.

I agree with her. It's a stunning hotel in an ideal location.
