If you don't have access to the article, here is the text:

This laid-back beach town — neighbor of Ixtapa, the resort destination on the Pacific Coast — and communities around it have spawned grass-roots environmental projects that travelers can support. The conservation nonprofit Whales of Guerrero has helped train fishermen as whale-watching guides, and Campamento Tortuguero Ayotlcalli offers opportunities to join turtle nest patrols and release hatchlings. The guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela, Rodrigo Sánchez and Gabriela Quintero, are involved with local vegan initiatives; Mr. Sánchez runs his own plant-based restaurant, La Raíz de la Tierra. Check into Playa Viva, 30 miles south. The solar-powered regenerative resort has helped revive the adjoining village of Juluchuca by providing education and employment in conservation, tourism and agriculture. It recently joined a new regional project to protect the watershed of the Juluchuca River, which begins in the mountainous interior where guests can take A.T.V. excursions to explore the headwaters at an off-grid coffee and cacao plantation.

This is really an article of world wide areas that they feel are making a difference environmentally. While any press,is good press, this doesn’t talk very much about anything other than environmental tourism. While the efforts regarding whales and turtles are to be applauded, there are a lot of other things, like the burning in the fields that aren’t that environmentally friendly. I think it’s interesting that they don’t mention the “blue flag” initiative and while they are promoting environmental awareness they are pushing ATV tours of the watershed they are interested in protecting.

I don't think the Blue Flag is a good thing for the environment or tourism. How is overbuilding and allowing skyscrapers on a beach "ecological" or "sustainable"? It's nothing more than a political stunt that has backfired, IMHO.

I don’t agree with the blue flag program either. This seems to me to be a puff piece. With all of the open burning, occasionally littered beaches and, as I understand it, a sewage treatment plant that is pretty much at capacity, I’ve never thought of Zihuatanejo as the environmental paradise the article implies.
Mind you there are plenty of places in the USA that are much worse than Zihuatanejo, but the article is far from an objective view,of the area.

A sobering thought is that Zihuatanejo proper (not the entire municipio) is one of the few towns on the entire Costa Grande that even has a working wastewater treatment plant. Most communities don't. And the population keeps increasing and the builders keep building. :-o

meanwhile the people in the hillside colonias of Zihua continue to burn plastic trash every morning even when Capaz will pick it up from their door step and they continue to have untold numbers of unneutered dogs. It is still the 1950s ecology wise in much of Zihua and even some of the younger people I have employed think nothing of burning plastic , you light a match and it disappears!

Well something is wrong! Two days Fishing this week has taken me south of Juluchuca.

The amount of roadside trash piles is just short of BIBLICAL!

Juluchuca is Petatlán, not Zihuatanejo. ;-)
