Mexico City to Zihua Drive
I know must people know this, but I was surprised how long the drive is from Mexico City (7 and half hours according to Google). I had looked at the map many times over the years and it looked much shorter. I guess mountains and some poor roads cause this.

Here along the coastal highway, the 80 or so topes between Zihuatanejo and the turnoff to bypass Acapulco make a 3 hour drive take 4. Once on the Autopista del Sol it's a breeze. The first time I drove between Acapulco and Mexico City it was on the old federal highway, and it was about a 6-hour drive, 8 by bus because they stopped in most every town along the way.

It is many years since I have spent any time in DF, but I was there in May. It reaffirmed my thought that it could easily take me an hour or two just getting into or out of DF! 
A couple of years ago I had a one-hour flight from ZIH to MEX. It took over two hours. The airport wad so busy, we had over an hour of circling, waiting for a landing slot.
I love seeing what is in DF and the area, but not the congestion. Give me the relative tranquility of our area any day.

From what I understand the extreme congestion at the airport was a main reason that the new airport was needed. But AMLO canned it so I guess they have to live with it.

AMLO canned the original project to build a new airport, but he replaced it with another one. It opened a few months ago and is called Felipe Ángeles International Airport. It's not very popular yet though, but they are trying to get more people and airlines to start using it.

Years ago, driving from Canada on our way south to Oaxaca, we thought we would zip through DF on freeways. Ha! The traffic started 75 km north of Mexico City...total gridlock....so bad that we took an exit to Toluca and eventually got to Oaxaca by a very long detour around DF.
