Guerrero's health officials report 2 confirmed currently active cases of Covid-19 in Zihuatanejo, NO cases for La Unión, Petatlán and Técpan, 35 in Acapulco, and 101 in the entire state.

Just when you think the local government couldn't screw up our tourism anymore, guess what they want to do again? Build a pier for cruise ships in Zihuatanejo's bay. Their greed knows no bounds.

It looks like we're going to have a parade downtown next Friday morning for Día de la Independencia Mexicana. If you're here come enjoy the first parade we'll have had in over 2 years.

Local politicians in La Unión are all giddy wanting to promote the construction of hotels in Troncones and La Majahua. There are already problems there with the Arq. Enrique Zozaya wanting to build high density condominium projects. Watch out or the politicians and their friends will ruin what so many folks have worked so hard to achieve, just like they're doing here in Zihuatanejo. They only care about their own interests and helping out folks who help their careers.

For fine lodging at Playa La Ropa I recommend Hotel Villas Las Azucenas. An enchanting small boutique hotel with a pool located just a few steps from the beach at Playa La Ropa with a delicious rooftop restaurant.

This panga came rushing in to beach itself, but it hit the sand rather hard and stopped way short. ¡Uuups!

Do not forget the "gift" I brought you several years ago the last time they seriously floated the cruise ship pier idea. :)

I shake my head every time I hear these ridiculous plans for the Zihuatanejo / Troncones area.
WHERE IS THE HOSPITAL THEY PROMISED A DECADE AGO.
How about building what is needed instead of turning this beautiful town in to another Acapulco. Yuck!

Thanks Rob for keeping us informed.

So sorry to hear about these continuing efforts by the local politicians to screw up the area while filling their pockets. But it's not just in Mexico. What I found so unique on my first visit to Hamilton Montana, which is now our home, was the rabbits hopping around people's front yards and the sidewalks on Main Street. A while back the mayor decided they needed to be trapped and killed. My letter in the local paper was the only protest I saw. Luckily, they didn't catch them all; there are still a couple left. Hopefully, they'll find each other and re-stock the area.

NO PIER!

by Commander Barrett, Tuesday, September 13, 2022, 09:39 (386 days ago) @ ZihuaRob

A pier is not necessary in our beautiful bay. Bar Harbor, Maine receives one to five huge ships daily during summer and fall. The streets, restaurants and shops are packed. They do not have a pier and it has been successful forever.

I agree. Launch service can be provided at a fraction of the cost of a new pier that could support a large cruise ship. But we need to remember that a Pier is made from Concrete and we know who sells Concrete in this town.

Robb or someone with a historical background in Zihua history, can you briefly summarize how an earlier effort in the beginning of this century to bring a large pier to Zihua was successfully opposed?
Gracias

Dumb question: Doesn't Ixtapa already have a cruise ship dock? I have been to Zihua many times in the past several years but only visited Ixtapa less than a handful of times. (Nothing personal but it might as well be any resort town anywhere in the world. The only differences are the masks on the walls.)

NO cruise ship dock is in Ixtapa.

NO cruise ship dock is in Ixtapa.

Then doesn't it make sense to put the cruise chip dock in Ixtapa? I am not trying to be pejorative, but wouldn't the cruise ship kinda' folks be happier in a resort-type town like Ixtapa instead of a more authentic Mexican town like Zihua? (My apologies for any animus that may appear to be leaking out of this post.)

They won't build a cruise ship pier in Ixtapa because too many influyentes have their properties there and it would ruin their precious view, which is basically part of the same position we take in Zihuatanejo. Plus it would make a large section of the beach unswimmable.

Oh, for Christ's sake............

The Reason: It would be impossible to put a cruise ship dock in Ixtapa because it is the open ocean, and it would get pounded to bits.

You mean like they have in Frederiksted, St. Croix? Look, you can even see part of Sandy Point where the final scene from Shawshank was filmed.

And there used to be a pier in Ixtapa but the 1985 earthquake damaged it beyond repair.

My apologies. I know less than zero about boats and their infrastructure. I get seasick in a bathtub. I can, however, stomach the 10 minute cruise from the Zihua pier to Las Gatas although I prefer to take the combi to La Ropa and hike the 15 minutes to Las Gatas.

True, but in the past, cruise arrivals have been bussed from the Zihua pier directly to Ixtapa, or so I'm told.

Now I wonder when we are ever gonna change
Living under the fear 'til nothing else remains

All the children say
We don't need another pier, oh
We don't need concrete in our bay
All we want is Playa Ropa
A safe and sunny place to play....

We marched. We informed ourselves and the public. Now I know more about the cruise ship industry than I ever wanted to, but it allows me to call out the bullshitters.

The old Message Board Archives contain a lot of info about several previous attempts to drum up support for a cruise ship pier. The gist is, so far truth wins over lies, but in this increasingly intentionally dumbed down world that will only work for so long before truth is finally ignored.

Another possible approach to avoid a Cruise Pier is to get a Mexican Based Company to provide the Tender-Service from Ship to Shore. This would be a long-term investment for the local community. I have cruised from LA to Acapulco and back with stops in Puerto Vilarta, Cabo, Mazatlan, and Manzanillo. Being tendered to shore wasn't a big deal at all........

I've been on several cruises and a lot of ports where the ship anchored out. Cruise ships are quite capable of providing transportation between the ship and shore.

Big ships don't really need to tie up at a pier unless they need maintenance or major re-provisioning.

With modern propulsion systems, they don't even need to throw out a coral-smashing anchor. Steerable pods, laterally mounted screws, and GPS allow the ship to maintain a station-keeping mode.

Agreed, we don't need a cruise ship pier to have cruise ships.

And as an aside I wish there were more marine transportation options. I would love to be able to take a ship from say, from ZIH to LAX and be able to get on and off like a train, just catch the next one on the way back down.

The 3 landings on the eastern side of the new pier were designed specifically to receive cruise ship tenders, but that part of the bay is way too shallow for any cruise ships.
