Today is the first day of Mexico's new smoking law. No smoking in public places. I wonder how that will be enforced?

Restaurant personnel will enforce the no smoking.
Can’t think of any thing worse than enjoying a meal and table next to yours lights up.Or smokers might think there doing you a favor by light up on the sidewalk next to your table.
It’s just as bad as the guy that has the bad bad BO with the short sleeve shirt holding on to the overhead hand strap in the bus.

The restaurant law has been in effect for a long time. This new law applies to beaches, parks and public areas as well

“Just as bad as”? Far worse.

I don’t recall reading any reports of anyone developing cancer attributable to exposure to some else’s body odour.

A damn shame careless smokers throwing their cigarette butts in streets, gardens and beaches make this proposal so attractive. I don't care if folks want to kill themselves smoking as long as they don't clog up the public healthcare system and as long as they dispose properly of their damn cigarette butts.

Holy smokes Rob, sure doesn't sound like the compassion you folks implored me to show others that many of you spoke of just last week in regards to my comments and views.

I mean....maybe these people have hidden problems you/we don't know of that we should all be more thoughtful of.

Saying you don't care if they kill themselves and just worrying about clogging up the public health system isn't a nice tone or approach.

In most places there are more supports for tobacco cessation and more ready access to those supports than there are for other substances. Those typically include legal access to tobacco; quality assurance of tobacco products; patches and gums that deliver defined amounts of the active agents; etc. The users of tobacco are not criminalized and incarcerated for long periods of time.

It seems to me that Rob is encouraging cessation assistance for those who are seeking, willing, and able to use such assistance; non-punitive approach to those who continue to use; recognition that some might choose a path of self-harm; and hope that those decisions do not excessively adversely affect the public health of others.

In contrast, some people believe users of non-tobacco drugs ought to receive no supports and instead be killed.

As if you could read my mind, and then express my thoughts more concisely and politely than I could, then add more cogent supportive arguments reminding IXTZIHUA of his own comments. Touché and gracias.

I thought I was being compassionate by stating "It's a damn shame..." ;-)

Thank you. Doing what you eloquently described was my job for many years. It’s nice to think that I still have the competencies.

I've always thought that if you are enrolled in a socialized health care system, you should pay extra if you are a smoker. This is coming from a guy who was a smoker for many years.

Where do you draw the line? Everyone engaged in behavior that's in any way risky should pay extra? Hockey players? Over-eaters? Drinkers? Skiers? Tennis players?
Why should I pay for broken teeth, stomach staples, cirrhosis, broken legs or tennis elbows?

Do you have actual data? I don’t but I suspect that they cost more because of frequent hospitalization for pulmonary problems.

Actually just read an abstract of a paper. It said that if everybody stopped smoking health care costs would initially decrease, but after a period of around 15 years they would go up since people would live longer. Interesting paper, but lots of hypothetical asumptions.

Am wondering what a ltr of gas or a can of beer would cost as the $28 to $30mil aday in taxes would have to come from somewhere.

No one ever notes that smokers tend to experience a shorter lifespan saving the Healthcare system $$$$.

Healthcare costs are based on heath/illness, not on longevity. My 69 year old friend with a healthy lifestyle has incurred dramatically less healthcare costs than his 57 year old brother who has been afflicted with MS.

Some behaviours, including smoking, result in increased health care costs even if fewer years are lived. From the British Medical Journal…

S4 appendix reports the unadjusted monthly healthcare costs between the study groups. Generally, smokers incurred higher healthcare costs than non-smokers for hospitalisations, physician services, ER visits, home care services and complex continuing care.

Focusing on specific types of healthcare costs, smokers had approximately 30% higher hospitalisation costs, 43% higher ER visit costs, 23% higher physician visit costs and 30% higher home care costs than non-smokers. Overall, total monthly healthcare costs were higher among smokers ($5649 ± $7169) than non-smokers ($4704 ± $6737).

Keep in mind that they only studied cancer patients which could skew the numbers. Ideally they should have studied smokers and non smokers.

Rodney Dangerfield said he and his wife agreed to only smoke after sex. he said he’s had the same pack since 1975. She’s up to three packs a day.

Maybe it is just me but I do not see that many people smoking. When I do, odds are it is a tourist of expat resident. Both of which should know where and when they can smoke.

Enforcement will be hard as with most laws being only suggestions as most laws go unpunished, unless your in Iran and then they hang you.

I have tried multiple approaches to viloators. One I told the man that there is no smoking here and please go outside. He stood up and blew smoke in my face after which I tried to rip his head off his torso. 4 guys stopped me. I was taken away and deported the next day. Good By UAE. The next time it happened I had learned from the last time. I found the no smoking sign and picked it up and held it and shook it about 1 foot in front of the little Chineese guy with the Mr. T Starter kit on. I was 18" taller and 75# larger than Mr WONG and he put is smoke out.

I have often though of carrying a can of spray water and YELLING FIRE and blasting the bastard with cold water. Have not done that one yet, but I will most likely just walk away from now on.

Your concern and ardor is admirable. Your decision not to escalate said situations is smart.

Nothing wrong with gently but firmly commenting that the behavior is illegal and dangerous to others, though.

I once sat beside a very well off Mexican family in a very well ventilated restaurant on the beach at lunch time. There was a two kids, a husband and wife. I had just been served my lunch and the man fired up a big cigar. I turned around to him and asked him to put it out. He waved me off, laughed and said that this was his country and he could do what he wanted. I said "not around me, you can't". I went and found the head waiter and he very respectfully handled the situation. The man and his family got up and left with the cigar still stuck in his mouth.
