Zihuatanejo-Ixtapa Message Board - Surfing Manta Rays!!!

It's that wonderful time of year again where here on Playa la Ropa the manta rays arrive and surf. They aren't very big, up to four foot wingspans, but boy do they put on a show!! We were watching some come in so far that they had to work to not stay beached. Actually had them swim between one of the dogs legs. Fun to be out in the breaking waves with them.

Just stand on the beach and watch!!

Years ago, a friend told me of being on a small boat in Bahía de Banderas doing a bit of fishing, not expecting to catch anything, when some kind of ray fish took the bait. The fish was so powerful the boat was being pulled out of the bay. They had to cut the line.

My daughter and her boyfriend went fishing in the Florida Keys this weekend, and while he's reeling in a fish they're debating about whether it was a dorado or a tuna, and they could see it splashing while it was still too far away to be certain. But then the line went slack. After he reeled it in, they saw the head of a Dorado (my daughter guessed right) that had been snapped clean in half by something larger, probably a shark. A reminder that the ocean's still a wild place.
