Onda tropical #20 surprised us last night with a delicious all-night-long rain that lasted well into this morning. Made for good snuggling weather, perfect for a cup of café or chocolate caliente with a large concha to dip in it. And onda tropical #21 is right on its heels and is expected to possibly bring a brief rain this Thursday night, with more rain expected on Saturday.

We are supposedly nearing the end of the Canícula, by some accounts. Let's hope that's true.

Westjet announces a new direct flight on Fridays to Zihuatanejo from Vancouver beginning December 22.

A "delicious" rain???

Yes, especially when it lowers the temperature by 10°C or more and provides much needed water that unfortunately, due to extremely poor urban planning (if any) and corrupt, inept municipal governments continues flooding streets and ending up wasted and polluting the bay. Above Agua de Correa is what used to be a dam that was intended to be used to provide a supply of water during dry periods, but corruption and ineptitude got in the way, squatters were allowed to inhabit the area (foreigners even helped them by building tiny schools for which there will never be adequate budgets) and the dam has silted in and been weakened by the dwellings that have been allowed to remain there. So because politicians chase the mass votes of the people they keep poor, we continue to have problems that only get worse, not better. I can still recall when our community envisioned a totally different future thanks to what were supposed to be our ecological zones on our formerly protected hillsides.

Yep, it didn't even rain that hard, but thanks to ALL THE FRIGGIN CEMENT streets and walkways with NO DRAINAGE, the water comes down from the overpopulated invaded hillsides quicker and in more abundance than ever.

And to think some idiots still consider building a marina and aquatic museum in the lagoon would be a good idea. The lagoon needs to be declared a park or protected natural area, and Cinco de Mayo needs to have its markets and other obstacles removed to stop the rest of downtown from flooding. Literally BILLIONS of pesos have been wasted by this administration and others to supposedly repair this problem, but it has only gotten worse, especially thanks to all the cement poured for roads to accommodate what began as squatter communities. This all goes back to the administration of Amador Campos and his infamous declaration: "Yo no los subí, y no los voy a bajar."

"Yo no los subí, y no los voy a bajar."

Apologies. I understand the words but I am missing the meaning. Is he saying he didn't put them (the squatters?) up there but he isn't going to take them down?

Yes, the mayor saying he would not enforce the law gave a green light to land thieves, and in the course of 3 years we went from having around 20 squatter communities to over 50. This was the period when the worst damage was done. A turning point in the history of Zihuatanejo when we lost a much more promising future to instead condemn ourselves to the incessant and unfixable problems we have suffered since then.
