What nice cooling rains we had Monday night and early Tuesday evening. Just what we needed. But much more rain is possibly on the way as Tropical Disturbance 90-E hugs the coast gathering strength with another similar disturbance right on its heels. This is typical weather for this time of year, and I've seen it rain hard non-stop for 2 and 3 weeks at a time. But we have a lot more cement streets and less trees and vegetation on our hillsides than the last time that happened, so it's a rather scary thought nowadays.
The last wave of summer vacationers are enjoying their final days before school starts. Though the hotels in Ixtapa boast cifras alegres of 70% occupancy, sales remain slow here in Zihuatanejo.
I was thoroughly disgusted this morning to discover turtle eggs had been tossed into the fugly plants by the museum in what used to be Plaza Olof Palme. I'd seen where a turtle had laid them on the beach next to Tata's restaurant and they'd been dug up, but apparently by a thief who must've panicked at seeing police drive or walk by as he was leaving the beach so he tossed them. I called every number possible, but absolutely NO public officials were answering phones this morning, certainly not the ones posted on the sign in front of the museum, the one that alerts visitors to the presence of turtles and that has numbers to call to report a nesting. Not even 911 seemed to work. So a friend, Francisco, a musician with Los Torcazos, went to the extreme end of the Paseo del Pescador to alert the Marina who took another half hour to return and collect the abandoned eggs for incubating in their protected area. Hopefully they will survive. Not a pleasant way to start the day.
For folks interested in seeing sea turtles nest and their eggs hatch, there's no better place to experience this marvel of nature than at Casa de la Tortuga, a 2BR vacation rental apartment with a pool on Playa Blanca. Guests can participate in the collecting of eggs and the release of baby sea turtles because the apartment is used to raise funds for the Campamento Tortuguero Ayotlcalli located on the same property.
