Zihuatanejo lost one of its best lawyers today with the passing of our dear friend Lic. Lucas Nava Brito. A man of incredible talent and decency who set a high standard for himself but who seemed to easily meet and surpass that standard. We will miss him dearly. Adiós, muy estimado amigo. QEPD

Hardly a tourist in sight this Monday. Lots of folks appeared to be running late getting their kids to school this morning as a new school year gets under way. We wish the students well in their studies.

Saw another turtle nest this morning that was just barely above the waterline. So sad to see these nests whose eggs are at great risk from the waves and tides, apparently a consequence of the extremely bright lamps along the downtown waterfront. It's incredibly frustrating and disappointing that the municipal government refuses to admit its error or to take measures to ameliorate the problem.

We enjoyed another picture-postcard perfect day, albeit a bit on the warm side. Glad we aren't facing anything like the monster storm bearing down on Florida's west coast where the full moon, the rains and the winds are likely to cause major flooding. The storm that had been predicted to hit us has thankfully wandered far out to sea.

They offer three 1- and 2-bedroom villas, two 2-bedroom bungalows and two simple guest rooms. They also have a pool and they are pet friendly.

This morning, early, we had the tracks from 20 turtle haul outs on la Ropa. Yesterday, only 17, Saturday, 21.

It appears that the city has abandoned the turtlearium between La Perla and La Arena on La Ropa. The shade cloth roof of the area where they relocated the eggs to came down a few months ago, and is still flapping in the breeze. We haven't seen the people out looking for nests, but that could be timing on our part.

Was it necessary??? Great question because most of the nests are laid high enough on the beach to be safe from high tides and hatch naturally, but then there is always the percentage that aren't high enough and are lost to the ocean.

Then there is the public education part of letting them hatch in the turtlearium and having people "launch" them. Great learning experience. Then they started soliciting for tips with encouragement from one of the neighboring restaurants.

It's fabulous to see the nests, the turtles laying, and the babies hatching. Life is great.

They have been collecting, but not at the volume I remember from last year. I haven't seen if they are going into the tent structure or not.

They who? Poachers? They are ready to pounce in spite of the penalties, when there are no authorities around, which usually there aren't.

City employees apparently. They drive a little cart on the beach (way too fast) from nest to nest and dig up the eggs. We did see them this morning collecting eggs, but didn't see where they are taking them.

Today's count for haul outs was 26.

Yes, a new location is in the works for La Ropa.

One rumor has it that the property behind the current location has changed owners and there is talk of a major development there.

Time will tell.

Exactly what La Ropa does not need. They've already allowed too much high-density development for which there are inadequate public services. This is how greedy politicians continue ruining paradise. They've never met a developer whose money they don't like.

We stopped by a hatchling release yesterday evening on La Ropa, in front of The Thompson. The expert from Ecologia -- same woman who collects eggs in the morning -- was teaching people about the turtles and the process. She said they will always keep the eggs on the same beach where they are laid and that the babies being released today were incubated at the same old spot on La Ropa. So despite the disrepair, it seems they are still using the same spot for now.

I thought the choice of location for the release in front of The Thompson was interesting -- vs where we have seen them in the past by La Perla. If they are indeed moving the tortuguero, The Thompson may be the only spot with the undeveloped beach front land high enough on the beach for it to go. And they would certainly benefit from the PR and marketing opportunities it would bring. (no judgement, just speculating)

I'm awfully glad to hear she said that, because last year they were removing them from La Madera and Principal and taking them to La Ropa.

Yes, money talks.

A shame that last natural spot on the beach between La Perla and the house next to Fidel Gutierrez' property isn't being preserved as a park where families can park, have cookouts, have free public facilities, public events (as they've been using it for), etc. The city should've bought that land. But their vision of the future is very different from one that would keep Zihuatanejo prosperous for locals. As we've already seen.

There's another release announced for tonight in front of La Perla, so maybe my speculation was premature.

How interesting that the La Ropa tortuguero sits abandoned barely 3 weeks after the mayor inaugurated the state forum "Protección, Conservación e Investigación de las Tortugas Marinas en el Estado de Guerrero" at the Barceló where, besides getting his picture taken, he gave himself a big pat on the back for the efforts of the city along with the much larger efforts of others to protect and incubate sea turtle eggs. Two years after forming a special Comité Municipal de Vigilancia y Protección de la Tortuga Marina (whom frankly I haven't seen do a damn thing). What a friggin fraud and hypo-friggin-crite!

Whenever you see a turtle nesting I urge everyone to please call either the Marina or the Bomberos. See their numbers on my Helpful & Emergency Telephone #'s page.

I believe that specific spot on La Ropa is being moved to a new location.

We saw two turtles porking in the water next to the municipal pier Thursday night. So, it continues!

I got some great footage Wednesday from my paddle board of two fornicating in the middle of the bay. Then 10 minutes later I lost my GoPro to the depths while trying to pick up some floating trash. I'm sure there's a karmic lesson there somewhere, but it is conflicting. I suppose they were meant to remain anonymous.
