Dreaming of Zihua on my cold, smoky walk this morning in British Columbia, I came across a discarded empty can of CABRÓN, a product new to me.

The label says "Tequila Blanco Cocktail, Cantarito, small batch, Natural Grapefruit, Orange & Lime Juice, 5% alcohol, premium tequila from Jalisco, cocktails crafted in Canada"...manufactured by a Vancouver company called "Cabrón Cocktails."

I had to look up the meaning of "cabrón".... and it's a naughty word, at least in English. Reminds me of the gringo hangout in Mazatlán - "The Lucky Bastard". But all is not lost: I'll get 10 cents for the can at the recyclers.

I've yet to find an even halfway decent canned tequila drink or cooler, including the Mexican ones made by El Jimador.

Has anyone had any experience with a Cabrón?

No experience with Cabrón but this reminds me of the controversy surrounding the pizza shop chain in Texas that named one of their pizzas La Ch!#gona. (The ! and # were added by the chain.)

Over the years, I have heard the word used many times. I have come to believe that it has usage like SOB in English. That is, the meaning is very contextualized.

Said with a sour look on one’s face to the guy in the bar who is hitting on your girlfriend it is an insult. Said with a smile to a friend who just bested you it is a compliment among friends.

I believe badass is canijo in Mexican slang...Cabron is more of a jerk or 'a' hole but often used as a term of endearment among friends.

Manhattan, Spring, 1997. I saw the prettiest Colombian girl I ever met. Waitress at the tapas bar Xunta, mojellas skewered in wine, hamhocks smothered in beurre blanc. Rosario was her name. She was looking foxy. We danced, we mingled. I told my friend from Bogota to call her "foxy" ("zorrosa" ) on my behalf. Growlll. Needless to say, that relationship never worked out.
