It has always been a puzzle to me why the 43 students from Iguala were abducted and murdered. This article details that the students were mistaken for members of a rival drug cartel. The U.S. government finally released tens of thousands of text messages between drug dealers, local authorities, and the military. Very sad and chilling.

Nothing that hasn't been known by the people of Guerrero since the day of their abduction. Things here are actually much worse than the article reveals.

And absolutely nothing of substance has changed in Guerrero since then. Nothing. However, we now have more police posing for photos just like the politicians.

Over 100 people have been jailed for the incident, so it isn't correct to say "no one has been convicted of the crime".

This sheds more light. I've read A Massacre in Mexico, which provided a lot of the narrative regarding the coverup by the Mexican government including torture of many innocent people to coerce confessions from them. A theory put forward in that book was that while the students had previously commandeered buses to attend marches in Mexico City, in this case they got a bus with compartments full of heroin.
