Last year, a village street dog in Troncones adopted me.

One morning it used its little 9” legs to follow me on my six kilometre morning walk. I thought it learned from its mistake, but the next morning it followed me on my six kilometre morning run. (I alternate walk days and run days.) He did that every day for weeks.

He hung around the house, but I wouldn’t let him in. I kept telling people he was “not my dog”. I was gone for a month and when I got back, people told me that he came to the house every day when I was gone. For days he kept coming to the door, crying. So I acknowledged that he had adopted me and I brought him to Canada with me.

Now we will be returning to Troncones in October, arriving on AeroMexico through Mexico City. I have been trying to learn enough that I don’t screw this up. I would be heartbroken if he were quarantined in Mexico City.

This site says,

You must present the Mexican border authorities with an original and a certified copy of a veterinary health certificate that has been issued within 15 days prior to export.

Have your veterinarian issue a health certificate. It must be printed on the veterinary clinic's letterhead, and contain the license number of the certifying veterinarian as proof of that veterinarian's right to exercise his/her profession. The certificate must be printed; hand written documents will be rejected. No official endorsement (signature by a CFIA (Canadian Food Inspection Agency) veterinarian) is required if this option is chosen.

Relaciones Exteriores

But this sites says,

Health Certificates: According to SENASICA, If you are not traveling from the USA or Canada, you will need to show a health certificate from a veterinary surgeon.

If you are NOT traveling from the USA or Canada, before you travel, your veterinary surgeon needs to provide you with a health certificate for each pet, issued by an official authority or by a licensed veterinarian in your home country, that should include proof of vaccines against rabies and distemper, administered at least 15 days before the arrival of your pet in Mexico. If you live in the US or Canada you do not need to present this certificate.

Bringing Pets to Mexico

And this one says,

A health certificate for dogs and cats from Canada is no longer needed to enter Mexico. Note: If transiting another country, such as the United States, it is the responsibility of the importer/owner to confirm import requirements for the other countries.

Export of dogs and cats to Mexico

And this site says,

And this site says,

I moderate a RVing in Mexico forum. LOTS of dogs and cats, and other pets crossing regularly, and flying in. The correct one is the one that says you don't need a health certificate, just a healthy pet. This one: Export of dogs and cats to Mexico

Good for you for being adopted by a dog! We understand your concern. Many years ago we were about to enter Belize, and they said at the border they would inspect our dog, and if she didn't pass, they would hold her in quarantine. We decided we didn't really want to cut through Belize, and went to another border crossing direct with Guatemala.

Others will tell you that they have always traveled with a health certificate, and it gets looked at. What is really important is to have what the airlines want, and they always want more than Mexico does.

Our 9 month old gets spayed tomorrow, and we are a bundle of nerves!!!! Shouldn't be, but are.

Happy travels.

I agree with Tally Ho, get what your airline wants, last year I cleared Mexican customs in guadalajara which unlike Zihua, has a real full time vet and an office. Though possibly not required, the vet was happy to see the vet certificate and Alaska Air required it before I could check the pooch in. Its a minor inconvenience compared to the physical discomfort of toting the pet and kennel thru airports etc.

Hola
I brought my dog from BC to Mexico for years . Just had to go to the
vet to make sure that his shots were up to date and get an international health certificate . One year, Mexico insisted that we get another shot for external parasites before we could leave the airport ( this was in Mexico City). They got a vet in and administered the shot. After paying 300 pesos for the vet and 500 pesos for the shot, we were free to go. Only missed one flight to Zihua. The sad part was the mutt died 2 weeks later. Coincidence? He was 17.5 years old . He is buried on the hill overlooking Playa Larga and Zihua bay.
Long may you run buddy.

So sorry for your loss. Pets are the best.

However, you aren't making us feel better about our spay tomorrow on our puppy!! We know she will be fine, but, hey, she is our baby!!!

We stupidly/planned this. We have a 13 year old, a 7 year old and the pup. It worked before, having the older girl break in and help train the puppy, and making it just a tiny bit easier when we lost our old one. Now, it's our Karma that is old...

Gotta seriously love our pets.

We have been so pleased that we have had four private messages about our girl's spay!

Our 9 month old Mexican weimaraner puppy, was spayed yesterday by our wonderful vet, Dr. Jorge Islas in Ixtapa. We have three weimaraners, and he has taken wonderful care of them for the 6 years we have lived here full time. All three weimaraners are from Mexico.

Little Diva, our newest baby, at 28 kilos, was dropped off at 11am and picked up at 6pm yesterday. She was mobile and doing well. She came home with anti inflamatories and pain meds, and, now 24 hours later, is, unfortunately, back totally up to her normal function. WAIT! We think she just passed out for the night! We are keeping her out of the pool and the ocean for 5 days, and then, hang on. She goes back in in 10 days for the stitches removal, but she is already a monster again.

We LOVE our dogs and are so incredibly happy with the care we get from Dr. Jorge.

Our dog will enter Mexico through MEX for the fourth time in November.
Preparation :
He just got his rabbies shot last week. It is valid 3 years, it was expired. I have a new vaccination certificate with Recall dates up to date. I thought it has to be done at least one month prior travel. Don’t forget you will need the vaccination certificate to show at custom when you come back in Canada too.
He will have another apointment a few days before the flight to get his health certificate. Usually the vet fills this official canadian Health Certificate. I will have 2 or 3 copies of those two documents in a file with originals).
Travel day :
At the airport in Canada, Aeromexico workers will need to see those papers and we will have to fill a discharge form. Don’t believe them if they say your dog will transit like a regular luggage in MEX (if like us he travels in a kennel in cargo). That is not accurate.
In MEX, after we find our dog near the luggages, we go to the animal control office (same room than luggage claim in terminal 2). Sometimes they will check the dog, sometimes they won’t. They will emit another paper needed to leave this room. Then we have to go to Aeromexico counter outside the secured area, to check in our dog for the next flight.

We had the same experience in November 2020, 2021 and 2022.

We will be flying next month with our 15 pound dog in the cabin with us through MC for the 5th time. As others have advised, follow the rules of the airline. It's AeroMexico's plane, their rules and we've never had a problem as long as we comply with their requirements. Please also notify AeroMexico ahead of time that you are bringing your buddy with you.

After you go through Immigration and Customs, there is an animal control office (SENASICA OISA) where you will present yourself with your dog. You will fill out a form, then give the agent the Certificate of Good Health from your vet. Make sure the address where you're staying in Mexico is complete, including postal code. It takes about 15 minutes for the agent to enter the info into the system and hand you the official Certificado Zoosanitorio Para Importación.

From AeroMexico's website:

"Requirements for animal transportation within Mexican territory:
An essential requirement for dogs and cats to be admitted for a flight within Mexico is that they must be at least 8 weeks old.

Vaccination record: up-to-date rabies vaccine, indicating date of application, period covered by vaccine, and product information (pets under 3 months of age are exempt from this requirement)

Certificate of Good Health, one original and one copy (valid for 5 days from date of issuance). Certificate must be extended by a veterinary physician on letterhead paper printed with the veterinary physician's professional ID number and contain the following data: owner's name and address. Animal's breed, sex, age, and color. Departure and destination address."

Hello
Just a reminder that rabies vaccine in Canada is good for 3 years. In Mexico, it is only valid for one year. Be careful travelling and make sure your rabies vaccine for your mutt is recent.

The 3 year rabies vaccine has been accepted by SENASICA for several years. The vaccine must be administered more than 30 days prior to bringing a dog into the country and does not apply to animals under 3 months of age.

Hola
Thanks for the update. The last time I brought my mutt down was 3 or 4 years ago. Things have changed since then.
