Staying in Playa La Ropa and wanting to know how to travel to Troncones for the day using the Colectivo vans or other form of buses.

Cheers

Your best bet is to get yourself downtown to Benito Juárez, the Main Street where the mercado is. Avenida Las Palmas is between the mercado and the ScotiaBank. On Las Palmas, just east of Juárez is the depot where the micros start their trip to La Union. Get onto the micro there.

Any time I have done that, I have gotten a seat. Any time I have got onto the micro more than three blocks from the starting location, I have stood most or all of the way to the Troncones drop off location.

Assuming that you know where to catch the collectivo van in Zihua, just tell the driver to let you off at Troncones (highway) stop. The last time I took the collectivo in March, the fare (one way) was 37 pesos to Troncones drop-off. Next, you have to take another van to travel into Troncones proper. You walk (carefully) across the highway and wait on the other side of the street for the well-marked Troncones van. I've never waited more than 5-15 minutes. The price is about 25 pesos to downtown Troncones; more if you go to the end of the line at La Majahua. Good luck.

Thanks so much Ray and LitteGuy for taking the time to post your information!

We stayed in La Ropa last year and took the colectivo many times into Centro, so my journey to Troncones shouldn't be too difficult.

In my experience (and I’ve done it many times), taking the micro from Zihuatanejo to Troncones is a whole different experience from riding a combi in Zihuatanejo.

The micros have multiple rows of forward-facing bench seats with very little leg room. My experience is that they are almost always “standing room only” within a few blocks of starting. But the standing room is only a full stand if you are under about 5’5”, which I am not. So for me, it is a sequence of bending my head forward until my neck is too sore. Then I straighten my neck while putting my knees into a partial squat. I maintain that position until my knees become too uncomfortable, then switch back to the previous position.

In town combis travel mostly on roads that are in pretty good shape. The micro travels on the old Ruta 200 that is not only very curvy, it is often well potholed and with topes through each of the small communities along the route. That brings us back to the difficult standing. Each of the potholes and topes is a possible time to bash one’s head on the ceiling of the micro.

I’m not suggesting you don’t do it. As I say, I have done it many times and I will continue to do it. But the experience is different.
