While I'm sure it's "good entertainment" for our visitors, most who don't know any better, my family finds it extremely disrespectful and rather crass that the current mayor has turned the formerly somber Día de Muertos into a 5-day Disneylandish Halloween party.

Over a quarter million people in Acapulco are currently without work, many are also without roofs over their heads, especially those who live in squatter settlements that took over many of Acapulco's hillsides, a mistake we see being repeated here in Zihuatanejo. There should be a lot of lessons to learn from Otis, but then local political parties and unscrupulous politicians wouldn't be able to develop the client system they've worked so hard on during the past couple of decades that includes collusion between FIBAZI, state, and municipal politicians. When FONATUR turns Ixtapa over to Zihuatanejo's municipal government this December, the first thing we can expect to see are land invasions in Ixtapa like we've seen on the hillsides of Zihuatanejo. The only reason there weren't any previously was because Ixtapa didn't have politicians seeking votes, only bureaucrats looking to please their bosses and not lose their cushy jobs.

With the loss of Acapulco as a vacation destination for this upcoming holiday season, Zihuatanejo-Ixtapa and our region naturally stand to benefit, and we're already seeing an increase in arrivals as well as in reservations. I'm also seeing an increase in internet traffic as well as in inquiries via social media. What I haven't seen are any measures by the municipal government to accommodate the increase in visitors. No new signage. No notices online. No new parking areas (to the contrary, for the entire day most of Juan N. Álvarez street was blocked for a parade at 7:30 this evening). No increase in police patrols. Nothing. Only the mayor posing for more photos where his own company's cement will be poured. Más de lo mismo.

The arrival of vacationers from Canada and the USA has been noticeable and is certainly appreciated. We see more of them in the bars and restaurants, walking the streets and beaches, and buying things in local stores. ¡Bienvenidos!

My dad had a great saying: You would piss and moan if you were hug with a new rope.

B-) :jam: Might be a 2024 theme? After all it is an election year!!

Just in case some people aren't familiar with the "rope" quote, being HUGGED by the rope wouldn't be so bad, but being HUNG by a new rope would be much worse!

And the Concurso de Catrinas the night before was also a lot of fun. Lots of people turned out for all the events.

A plug for this place. You are less than three minutes walk from the beach and three lovely restaurants- Pati’s, Triton and Villa Mexicana. Down the street is a fun bar “Loot” and an excellent Italian restaurant Tratoria Giavanni’s. Plus an Oxxo and the delightful cafe Uma where you can get smoked salmon/cream cheese bagels.

Yes, your neighbour has a drumset :stones: but it is electronic so you never hear him (unless he is singing along to his iPod on the balcony).

Haha. Wes on one side Luis on the other. They have a Manitoba connection that they may be unaware of Wes is from the Brandon area and Luis gave golf lessons in oak lake 30 miles as way.
