Why don't I ever see seagulls in Zihuatanejo?

You do! The Napolean gulls have arrived, maybe 3 weeks ago and will be here for a while, well into spring.

It's kind of like asking why doesn't Hawaii have seagulls? Why don't we have sea lions? Most of those answers are because our water is too warm!

It's a great thing to research on line.

Welcome to our paradise.

WAIT We just pulled out our bird books and are questioning our response. Looks like, maybe, the dudes we have been calling Napolean gulls are actually terns! Stay tuned to see if we can figure it out before bedtime, or if we have to see them in the morning. It they have a split tail they are terns, if not, gulls.

I was in Zihua recently. Just walking down the road.
I think maybe a seagull shat from above and landed in my eye.
So I walked into Adelita's for cover and explained what happened.
Waitress said, "Would a little toilet paper help?"
I responded "No, that bird is probably miles away by now."

Yandosan, you have a very sick sense of humor. I admire that in a person.

Few know that sea gulls in Vladivostok are called “Foo birds.” It is considered very unlucky to clean up if a Foo bird bombs you with feces. This, of course, has led to the well known Vladivostokian saying, “If the Foo sh**s wear it.”

Interesting. I think the musician who started the Foo Fighters band
said in an interview that was a common term for UFO's in WWII.
Birdshit, Hitler, alien spaceships, all comes from a common source.
Who knew?

They are definitely gulls not terns.

A sick sense of humor is something to be admired, and we admire yours!!

Few know that terns almost always travel in pairs. As we all know, “one good tern deserves another.”

Thank you. We usually see them in threes...

Looking forward to seeing you two soon.

I was sure hoping someone else would stoop lower than the Good Doctor. However, I will take the bait.

Scientists are studying the effect of cannabis on sea birds. They've left no tern unstoned.

A Russian scientist has recently been arrested for stealing seagulls from the state zoo in Vladivostok. His research revealed that if he fed freshly hatched seagulls to dolphins their life span was extended by 74%. Unfortunately his escape route led through the African veldt exhibit. The resident lions were busy eating an antelope and didn't notice him so he was successful in his quest. He is awaiting trial for "transporting young gulls across state lions for immortal porpoises."

Sounds vaguely like the 1910 Mann-atee Act.

Ouch!

A sailor was caught AWOL as he tried to sneak on board his ship at about 3 am. The chief petty officer spied him and ordered the sailor to stop. Upon hearing the sailor's lame explanation for his tardiness, the officer ordered the sailor, "Take this broom and sweep every link on this anchor chain by morning or it's the brig for you! The sailor began to pick up the broom and commence performing his charge. As he began to sweep, a tern landed on the broom handle. The sailor yelled at the bird to leave, but it didn't. The lad picked the tern off the broom handle, giving the bird a toss. The bird left, only to return and light once again on the broom handle. The sailor went through the same routine all over again, with the same result. He couldn't get any cleaning done because he can only sweep at the chain once or twice before the blasted bird returns. When morning came, so did the chief petty officer, to check up on his wayward sailor. "What in the heck have you been doing all night? This chain is no cleaner than when you started! What have you to say for yourself, sailor?" barked the chief. "Honest, chief," came the reply, "I tossed a tern all night and couldn't sweep a link!"
