:musicalnotes: As Lupita and I strolled along the Paseo del Pescador early Tuesday evening, I was a bit saddened to hear only Gringo music from each and every establishment that had music playing. Although it was good music from the 70's, it wasn't tropical music and no one was singing anything in Spanish. Please folks, just because you may not speak the language doesn't mean you can't enjoy local music. Please ask to hear something local or at least Latino and tropical at the establishments you patronize. Hire the Hermanos Morelos for a few songs. Enjoy where you are while you can!

Our ocean temps remain above average at around 30°C, keeping the ambient temps along the coast higher than they normally are at this time of year. The hillsides are a little less green each day. Unless it rains soon, the change in color of the hills from green to brown will happen much sooner than usual this year.

SAM'S CLUB in Acapulco reopened today. Another sign of Acapulco coming back to life. The cleanup continues. Federal, state and local governments and THE PEOPLE working together and working hard are making little miracles happen. Schools are a long way from reopening, but roads continue getting cleared, medical facilities continue reopening, lights keep getting turned on, potable water remains a huge problem but is advancing, reconstruction is getting underway, and lots of help continues to arrive. But not a word about Acapulco in any English-language foreign news service that I've seen.

[image]Casa Mi Corazón is an amazingly beautiful lodging located atop the hill at Playa La Madera. Divided into a 2BR upper and a 1BR ground floor apartments, the house can be rented in its entirety. An amazing pool has been added to the uppermost floor where you can float while gazing across the bay.

I am always troubled by the preponderance of gringo music down here. I am guilty of it myself by co-hosting karaoke for Jagger and Richards’ 80th birthday parties but that is a once in a lifetime experience. I regularly hire the local strolling musicians to play Mexican music. Why can’t people take a vacation from CCR etc and explore a new culture? As for gringo women going “ba ba baa” during Sweet Caroline ……. Aaaaggghhhhh:jam: :rockband:

I wish I could remember the name of the book I read about Mexican music - very enlightening.

I agree with the request for the music and support of local musicians. But I also got a kick this weekend having 12 nationals blasting and singing Eagles tunes on the beach the other day. We chatted, drank beer and ended the day with Jose Jose.

Funny how when I walked into the condo the last few days, and the work crew music was Metallica, Motley Crew, even some Ozzy. I guess they didn't get the memo on listening to "Traditional Mexican Music" :jam:

What I really admire about the younger generations is that they have no problem seeking and choosing the types of music that speak to them. Would we growing up in the 1960's and 1970's have listened to our parents' music? Hell, no! "We don't care how good Rosemary Clooney or Frank Sinatra or Louie Armstrong are! We are rock 'n' rollers!"

I saw a chica proudly showing off her Lynyrd Skynyrd tee-shirt once. I accosted her and asked if she really listened to them. She said, "Oh, yeah! They rock!" I walked away singing, "Gimme' three steps. Gimme' three steps, Mister..."

Interesting. I have Sonos speakers and streaming music services at my house. The housekeeper and yard guy always want “música Mexicana”. When I have had renovations done, roof work, etc., the workers always request the same. (Otherwise, I’m usually listening to some kind of smooth jazz as background music.)

We agree with you, Rob. We also prefer to hear musica Mexicana -- one of the MAJOR reasons we decided to retire in Zihua. Whether it be salsa, rumba, or romantica.

The perfect musical antidote for all that Gringo stuff is Zihua's wonderful trio, SOLO TRES. Local, tropical AND Latino. Mexican boleros and romanticos, songs from Puerto Rico, Cuba, Venezuela.....all in Spanish! And if a few of their numbers sound familiar - "Perfidia" or "Quien Sera" come to mind - that's because Gringo performers did English-language covers.

And then there is pseudo-Spanish.
Consider the Sun King, by the Beatles.

Here comes the Sun King

I always thought that those words from Sun King were Italian. All my grandparents came from Italy but we were never taught Italian. When the families would get together and all the abuelos y tios would be speaking Italian, our grandmother would say to us li'l folks, "You American. You speak English." It was a damned shame, though. If I had learned Italian as a child, it would have been a helluva' lot easier to learn Spanish.

Looks like a mixture of Italian and Spanish.
And some Lennon-istic wordplay. No wonder they compared him to James Joyce.
I also remember some pseudo-Spanish in the Clash lyrics of Spanish Bombs,
something like "Yo te querra, oh ma corazon" but online fans have corrected/altered the words that I once thought might be Catalan.

I should add that on a recent trip to Cuba, we struck up a conversation with the middle-aged bartender in the only quiet bar at our Varadero resort. (We found that the incessant beat of much Cuban music can be really irritating after an hour or so at high volume). Anyway, we got around to discussing music and we all agreed that we most enjoy ballads, and "romanticos"....and in our case, especially Mexican boleros. I noted that our favourite group in Mexico, Zihua's SOLO TRES, often performed some Cuban songs as part of their repertoire - for example "Son de la Loma" and "Guantanamera". He promptly pulled out his cellphone, plugged it into the bar's speaker system, and played "Son de la Loma" by several Cuban singers....followed by almost a dozen numbers by Mexico's wonderful trio, LOS PANCHOS! It was a nice, relaxing evening, sipping Cuban liquor de café and listening to great songs.

Traditional music is much better than some of the crap they play at pool bars when we used to do all inclusive, at least you feel like you are in Mexico. That being said, if the wife and I hear some good rock, that is where you will find us. Lots of Mexicans love rock or other non traditional music along with hamburgers, hotdogs, pizza, Nike shoes, Chevy trucks and even Louis Vuitton. In fact I believe I bought my wife a Louis Vuitton purse in Guadalajara for $20. There goes poor U.S. policy ruining Mexico again or maybe it’s just freedom of choice.:stirpot:

In our neighborhood, we always hear music - usually Mexican. However, a few years ago when we had a boat, I was standing on the shore of the lagoon waiting for my husband to finish tying it up when his cousin goes by in his boat, playing the Doors' Light My Fire. As he moves further into the lagoon towards his parking place I hear six other fishermen/boat guys from around the lagoon singing along with the chorus, Come On Baby Light My FIRE! in off-key, heavily accented English. It's a combination!

The best Doors cover band I have ever heard is from Mexico City.
I heard them one night a few years ago in Ixtapa.
The lead singer was floored when I told him I had seen the Doors in 1967.
It was a bad night for Morrison.
He came out very drunk and antagonized the audience to the point where most left, including me.
A few years ago I read on the internet that he recovered and they put on a fine show...

Ask Maria (owner of Restaurante Las Adelitas on la Ropa Rd) to play musica mexicana. She will gladly do so.
