Zihuatanejo's natural beauty manages to survive despite the onslaught against it by the town's own mayor who ordered city workers to cut down another large healthy tree today in the middle of town so that he could pour more of his cement for another public project of dubious necessity and get paid for it by taxpayers. Now is the time when local businesses, families and neighborhoods have their traditional Christmas parties called Posadas, a wonderful tradition that I hope you all will be able to participate in. Keep alert for Posada invitations by your lodging or neighborhood. They are a lot of fun and a good way to meet locals and practice some Spanish.

The Christmas decorations are all set up along the waterfront. They haven't even been there 2 days and some of them have already been vandalized. Too bad. Not likely there'll be much left by the end of the holiday season. But that's what we get for having over 60 bars open day and night just in the downtown section of Zihuatanejo alone. An alcoholics' paradise! I've seen some Marinos patrolling, and local security is supposed to be beefed up with the arrival of additional Guardia Nacional and military personnel, but I read the municipal government will have them setting up roadblocks and applying alcoholímetros instead of patrolling the streets. Hopefully they will also be patrolling even during the wee hours when the borrachos are at their worst.

Saw sea turtle tracks and a nest on the beach this morning. With any luck the nest will survive the onslaught of Christmas vacationers, though it isn't marked (but I know right where it is). It amazingly survived the poachers who aren't as vigilant at this time of year.

The fishermen have been catching a lot of huachinango and pargo recently. Cooler currents are moving in. They should help keep our temperatures milder and make for even cooler sleeping weather at night. Still no snow in our forecast.
