Canadian killed at Quieta

Any news yet on whether the woman who died at Playa Quieta this morning was attacked by a crocodile or a shark?

Local media report Thursday p.m. the death of a Cdn male. A woman was reported injured. Source of the attack unclear, whether a shark or a croc. The last fatal shark attack we can recall occurred off Troncones around 2005.

From Facebook photos it definitely looks like a woman died and apparently another woman was injured

According to Jorge Sánchez & my surfer friend it was a crocodile attack, however Rob Whitehead will probably disagree as he feels it was a shark. Either way it does make entering the water at Quieta a little bit scary

I agree, but I would be in Zihua, not Xtapa, but still!!!! Yikes. They say shark attacka and Grizzly attacks are rare, but does not appear to be from all the news. Apparently those animals are pissed at humans or the food chain is dwindling!

Also, I had something "big" run into my thigh swimming at Barra de Potosi AND what was assumed a "sting ray" slice my big toe at same place. I have seen rays in the water in Zihua as well as snakes. Any sharks ever visit the bay in Zihua?

There has been a lot of croc sightings as of late. One was walking through Coacoyul last week and there was a big one in the water at La Ropa a couple of weeks ago.

There are ALWAYS and have always been crocs and sharks in our waters, including in Zihuatanejo Bay where my wife, Lupita, is currently swimming. This is nothing new.

Agreed that having sharks appear in these waters is nothing new. My neighbour, a dive-shop operator, confirmed that just this morning. What is new, and may be triggering these attacks on people might be related to climatic change. What recently provoked that tropical storm off Acapulco, to convert to a Cat. 5 hurricane in a matter of hours, may also be affecting shark behaviour?

Some of the local fishermen say it is normal for sharks to come close to shore at this time of year to spawn, but they speculate that the absence of schools of anchovies due to overfishing may be affecting their eating habits.

My wife and I have been coming to Zihua since 2008. I have been a Scuba instructor and commercial diver in Canada since the early 1970's. In 08 at Barra de Potosi, I was snorkeling just NW of the village. There was a large croc in the ocean and according to the Bomberos, they would sometimes slip out of the lagoon. However, these freshwater creatures are out of their normal environment and unless one accidently runs into a human they do not hunt for us. All that said, sharks are a different Kettle of fish (pun intended), especially Bull Sharks. Those nasty buggers are known a to be in the waters off Ixtapa and Zihua. We seldom see them because they normally hunt at night in deep water. It appears the attack was early morning which would seem to me to have been a shark. While in Zihua I swim in the Bay every morning for a couple of Kilometers and other than dive bombing Pelicans and the odd Manta, no 25-foot man made great whites.

saw 3 yellow flags on the beach at La Ropa late this Sunday afternoon. No other info as to what that meant for the average beach comber or swimmer other than the word precaucion on one of the flags.

Last year they decided that the yellow flag would be the default so that people are "extra careful" at all times. So it means nothing.

I was at La Ropa last year and not paying much attention a lady I was chatting with at Pati's and I decided to head into the water. A life guard came running towards us telling us not to swim as the croc or crocs was in the water. I was glad for the warning. No wonder no one was swimming. Ha!
Still feel nervous. Only going to be there a week before I head inland. But still....kind of hard to think about it. Jaws really did ruin me and I love to swim!!

In Ixtapa/Zihua area beaches one can walk out quite far before the water reaches shoulder height. Our experience in Melaque was that the water gets very deep close to shore. I'm guessing sharks might feel more at home in the deeper water of Melaque beaches.

It seems weird that we haven’t heard anything official. Or maybe I’m not looking in the right places. This Canadian mainlander wants to go paddle boarding again this morning and I’m a good swimmer, but have no ocean smarts or knowledge. I mean, except to watch for a fin which I learned from Jaws. ????????

I heard that Protección Civil trapped and removed the baby cocodrilo that lives in the canal "La Boquita". Really pisses me off they did that. I hope it's not true. That's exactly how you teach a croc to hate humans.
Fishermen were out in the bay up to their necks in the water fishing with hand lines. There were so may fish in the bay this morning I could smell them, and the birds were enjoying a nice breakfast all along Playa Principal. I can't speak to any other part of the coast. Please read my daily posts for updates.

Thanks for the reply. Paddleboarding was lovely and uneventful. It’s even nicer right now at that time of day- 8:00 ish-off La Ropa, because Paty’s does a singing bowl chakra meditation, and you can hear resonate it in the bay. Very meditative.
A video was just posted on A.M. Noticias Facebook page of two sharks spotted by a fisherman at Playa Linda this morning… FYI..

Yes, I've seen the video of what looks like a small shark feeding on the abundant small fish currently along our coastline. Obviously it's too small to have been the shark that attacked the gentleman the other day. Locally on the social media there appears to be a state of hysteria with people posting photos of every crocodile and shark they see. Not helpful.

Agreed there is a lot of hysteria around on this subject. I mean, how many references have been made on this site in the last three days to the movie "Jaws"? And that big "hit" was produced, what, nearly 50 years ago?
That said, this state of Guerrero has hosted more unprovoked shark attacks than any other Mexican state in the last several decades, according to International Shark Attack File, out of Florida. There have been two shark attacks of Mexico´s Pacific Coast in the last 12 days (ref. Melaque). Both have been fatal. According to ISAF, only Egypt and South Africa experienced those figures, and that was in the entire year 2022.
So, something is going on here, and as I suggested in an earlier post, it has everything to do with climate change. And as long as climate change and its effects on ocean life are with us, so too will be this current dust-up surrounding sharks.
It may be hysteria, but it should also be considered a public safety issue.

It all has to do with water temperature and availability of feed, not necessarily climate change.

I suspect that climate change is the cause of the change in water temperature, resulting in a lack of feed.

I just saw a news video where they are waiting for some test results to determine if it was a shark or a croc. From what I understood, there is distinct bacteria between the shark and the croc that can be found on the deceased person. If true, time will tell.

That seems far-fetched. All that sea water would wash out most of the bacteria. It might be a riddle that never gets solved, like who Carly Simon was talking about about in "You're so Vain."

my unscientific poll of the meseros at Rosy s on Sunday all pointed to crocodilias. I am holding out for Mr. Shark. I did give Jaws a thought while swimming on Sunday late afternoon. The water in the Bay is finally noticeably cooler and clearer than a month ago.

So…we’re just voting now? Everyone’s “own truth” as they say? Next step, if we aren’t already there is conspiracy cuckoo land…i.e. “they know, but they aren’t saying” or feeding us disinformation. Sheesh, I’m still holding out for the forensic analysis Rob referred to when he cast his shark vote.

There is a video that was caught by a young couple filming their daughter frollicking on the beach area at Playa Quieta and catches the shark? attack on film. I’m not sure how to post or I would post the story here but I’m sure some of you may have seen this already. That’s a beautiful strip of beach that we frequent regularly. I’m concerned to say the least. From what I can see, it appears that the swimmer was tied to a buoy, and had a wetsuit on, but that’s just my take from what I’ve seen. I know that his companion was also bitten, but there is no sign of her on the video.
