None of the local media have given honest coverage of the work stoppage by Zihuatanejo's public transportation workers. And as usual, not a peep from the mayor. He's too busy enjoying his all-expenses-paid vacation to Madrid to promote Zihuatanejo to Europeans who have NEVER been an important part of our tourism market and never will. So we're all left with nothing but chisme to go on while the public, including our visitors, suffers from the local government's continuing inability to provide public security, and for which reason the U.S. government blacklists Zihuatanejo. So frustrating.

For those of you who have to get to the airport but don't have a ride, federally licensed drivers such as tour guides and ETASA are still operating and can take you to the airport or anywhere else you need to go.

For what it's worth, I've seen absolutely no additional public security in Zihuatanejo, in spite of numerous claims by the mayor and the governor. As always, we're on our own here and our local politicians are absolutely useless.

Congratulations to all the pickleball players who participated in the Segundo Torneo Internacional de Pickleball at Zihuatanejo's Unidad Deportiva!

Yepper! You guessed it! Another day of absolutely picture-postcard-perfect weather! In spite of the lack of taxis and combis, there were still a lot of visitors out walking around enjoying our warmth and doing some shopping. Restaurants along the downtown walkway were busy this evening. Daniel's Restaurant was packed! Still no snow in our forecast.

I don't want to call out this restaurant because they are a good group and it was not their fault but attending a local restaurant where people where camping nearby, as I left the restaurant the police had arrived and 3 of them were robbed about 8PM a couple of days ago. Very upset first time for them after coming here for over 20 years every year they say. Petty thief pilfering through the place. They said some clothing, beach items, shoes but the largest loss was a very expensive camera was taken.

The lady was very upset and I was wondering if there are any places anyone knows where she might go in town like pawn shops to try to find her camera or is it a "done deal"?

Details are a bit fuzzy....trying to guess which restaurant might have people camping nearby. Were the victims campers, or restaurant patrons? lf the latter, I'd like to know which restaurant would allow a "petty thief pilfering through the place."

On thefts in general, read the accounts in the local papers of an incident a few days ago in a small town, or towns, along the Zihuatanejo-Cd. Altamirano highway where unmarked white vans and, reportedly, "soldiers" with their identifying badges covered, shook down an entire village or villages. This is lawless Guerrero at its worst.

I'm afraid you misinterpreted or misunderstood what's happening in the sierra of Zihuatanejo and Petatlán. The military set up roadblocks that residents beholding to narcos complained about. Narcos are trying to take over the region of the sierra where the military is trying to restore order. The military aren't the bad guys here.

I took the Spanish-language news story from local media and ran it through the Google translate link on your Message Board. I didn't interpret or misinterpret anything. If anyone has misunderstood or misinterpreted, it must be Google or the news media. Regardless, anonymous white vans full of anonymous "soldiers" has seldom been a good sign. But then again, who can keep track of events in Guerrero? We recall that in the years when we used to drive our vehicle down from Canada, we were regularly warned to stay clear of the Zihua-Altamirano highway, so it sounds like nothing has changed.

Translation problems aside, your error is reading the news article without context, and perhaps believing it was written by a reporter. The recent problem in the sierra is actually an old problem. My goodness, I was writing about it on one of my blogs over 10 years ago. It takes more than one poorly-written media note to grasp the broader picture. And though the federal government is trying to deal with it with the military and Guardia Nacional, notice there's not a peep from the local government, and the state has its hands full trying to cooperate with the federal government while also pursuing its own agenda. Arrests last year in the sierra of Petatlán, the recent massacre at the palenque in Petatlán, and the use of drones to bomb villages in the sierra of Petatlán are some of the incidents that have made the news that you may have heard about that, but villages in the sierra of Zihuatanejo have also been under attack. Entire villages have been abandoned, returned to their homes, abandoned again and remain in a state of flux. All so that tens of millions of Gringos can have the stupidly banned popular recreational substances their so-called representative government denies them.

Maybe I'm just stupid, but I miss your point. If the USA weren't insisting on empowering violent organized criminals, then Guerrero, like most of the rest of America south of the Río Bravo, would be a much more peaceful and less violent place instead of everyone fighting over who's going to make millions supplying the Gringos with their stupidly banned popular recreational substances. Oh, and most of those folks trying to cross the USA's southern border without proper documentation wouldn't be there.

It appears the point is Mexico would have been better off if the United States had completely subsumed their country. My Fox News-loving brother-in-law on a few occasions has blurted out that we should just roll in and take over. Recently, right-wing pundits and politicians threaten to send troops into Mexico to deal with the cartels and drug trade. There is never any mention of the demand side of the equation, of course.

As Mr. Stump so eloquently catalogued in our high school U.S. History class a million years ago, one of the major themes of the United States in the 1800's was Manifest Destiny. The oft-repeated mantra was, "Sea to sea. Pole to pole."

The attempt to annex Canada via the War of 1812 was stymied. There was some discussion of annexing all of Mexico after the victory in what the U.S. called the Mexican-American War and what the Mexicans called the War of North American Invasion. Instead, the U.S. was content in annexing approximately 55% of Mexican territory.

After these two events, Manifest Destiny then became simply, "Sea to sea." I still have deep admiration for Mr. Stump, a veteran of World War II. He fought for and loved his country but did not countenance any sanitizing of our history.

Oh, by the way, shouldn't invading a sovereign nation on the flimsiest of excuses in order to steal half their territory be considered lawless? Darned shame this matter of fact is not known by all.

I think most national anthems are like that. Nothing stirs the blood of patriotic fervor more than the glories of battle and conquest. Though I don't have a drop of French blood in me, and have no leanings that way, to me the Marseillaise is the most stirring national anthem there is. The rendition of it in Casablanca still gives me goosebumps.

Little known fact…

Canada has one national anthem, “O Canada”. But O Canada has two different set of words.

The words of the English version are:

O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all of us command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

The words in French are:

Ô Canada!
Terre de nos aïeux,
Ton front est ceint de fleurons glorieux!
Car ton bras sait porter l’épée,
Il sait porter la croix!
Ton histoire est une épopée
Des plus brillants exploits.
Et ta valeur, de foi trempée,
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.

Translated to English this means something like:

O Canada!
Land of our ancestors,
Your forehead is surrounded with glorious florets!
Because your arm can hold the sword,
He can carry the cross!
Your story is an epic
Most brilliant exploits.
And your value soaked faith,
Will protect our homes and our rights.
Will protect our homes and our rights.

(There is also a bilingual version that mixes the two.)

Little known fact…

A ".....little known fact" by whom?

Every Canadian certainly knows there is an official French-language version. And even Westerners with the most rudimentary knowledge of that language probably understand that the French words are not just a translation of the English. The original was written by French-Canadian Calixa Lavallée.

The translation is relatively benign. Check the English translation of all the verses of the Mexican anthem for some inflammatory chest-beating rhetoric.

I would say it is a little known fact amongst the 99% of the world that is not Canadian.

And the fact that it is relatively benign was, I think, the point of the post...not every national anthem is blood and guts and bombs and glory.

A little digging comes up with a less "archaizing" translation, that makes much more sense:

O, Canada! Land of our ancestors,
You wear a garland of glorious flowers,
Because your arm knows how to carry the sword,
And it knows how to carry the cross.
Your history is an epic tale
Of the most brilliant adventures,
And your courage, strengthened by faith,
