Zihuatanejo and surrounding area safety
Hi — reading through this forum it does seem that there is a pretty significant amount of crime and violence. Is it safe to drive to neighboring areas like Troncones or down near Petatlan? I have traveled throughout Mexico but the stories here are giving me some pause.

Some of the reports on this site sound worse than they are. Most all are Late Late at night or early AM incidents that involve bad guy against bad guy. Town is fine, be home by 2400. Do not drive at night. Petatlan had some problems a couple of months ago, but again that was bad guys against bad guys. Troncones looks to be fine. Many locals and tourists go there on a regular basis. No problems. Taxis are all good. Combis are all good. Beaches are all good. Stores are good. Some streets are not so good 
Life is good.

In the daytime we drive wherever. That includes trips to Lazzaro, and Puerto Vicente. No issues since December.

In the daytime we drive wherever. That includes trips to Lazzaro, and Puerto Vicente. No issues since December.
But don't drive the highway towards Altamirano....day or night.

WTF would drive there? That is clearly not a main highway.

WTF would drive there? That is clearly not a main highway.
It is if you want to get to Altamirano. Years ago, we spent 3 months driving around Mexico, including lots of secondary highways to out-of-the-way places. The only highway we were warned to avoid was the route from Highway 200, up into the mountains toward Altamirano.
