I need some guidance. My wife and I have become friends with a young lady who is graduating from college soon. She has asked me to be her honorary godfather. I/we are happy to do this. My question is about tradition of this, especially in the financial area. We plan to give her something of course, but my question is what would be an amount that might be common? What else might I need to know about this?

We knew a fellow snowbird who agreed to be a "Godfather" to a local Zihua youngster who was then, I believe, still in primary/elementary school. Over the years, our friend layed-out substantial amounts of money and even felt obligated to make several off-season trips to Zihua to attend various milestone events in the child's life. A wonderful, altruistic arrangement, as long as one enters into it with eyes wide open. Personally, it would seem uncomfortable...even embarrassing....to attempt to define or impose limits on the extent of ones financial committment as a pre-condition to accepting the "honour."
