We awoke to a strong smell of smoke this morning in Zihuatanejo, and when I glanced outside the smoke was apparent across the entire bay. This is the worst it's been so far this year for us, though other parts of the state have had to close schools and businesses due to the smokiness from wildfires, mostly started by campesinos clearing their tlacololes. During our evening stroll I could see a small fire on top of Cerro Darío where it appears invasores are clearing land to occupy, as is common during election year when the mayor will make them promises in exchange for their votes instead of applying any laws to remove them. There was another larger fire raging in the hills above Coacoyul whose smoke could affect Zihuatanejo during the night. This can be a rough time of year for anyone with respiratory ailments.
Quite a few tourists were returning from Las Gatas this evening as we strolled towards the pier. Lots of smiling happy faces. When we got to the pier we were saddened by the amount of plastic garbage visible in the water around the pier. There was an official of the Capitanía trying to maintain some order (wonderful to see), but until people are fined for littering they will continue to be careless with their garbage. Though things have certainly improved over the years, without fines and vigilance plastic will continue entering our local waters, and all the Blue Flags in the world won't make a bit of difference.
I met a couple of long-time readers of my website this evening who were having dinner at Madano on the waterfront. A nice couple of handsome gay men whose names I tried to remember but am failing at for the moment. I wish I weren't so terrible with names. I hope they'll leave their trip report here. Their kind words sure made my evening, and they invited us to join them, but I had to decline since I still had several chores to do, including this post. I want my life back! Gonna have to work something out so I can socialize more at night.
There's nothing quite like a beachfront lodging on La Ropa, and one of La Ropa's hidden gems is Bungalows Vepao. A small inn owned by a local family offering rooms and suites, many with kitchenettes, all with wi-fi. Pool and restaurant on property.

Otra amanecer tranquilo en Playa Principal en la bahía de Zihuatanejo. Hubo muy poca gente en la playa y el Paseo del Pescador.
