We enjoyed another absolutely picture-postcard-perfect day in Zihuatanejo this Tuesday. Hardly a tourist anywhere to be found, but the bay was still beautiful and the weather fabulous. Towards the end of the day it clouded up and rained slightly, but nothing heavy and certainly not enough rain for our needs. It didn't even muddy up the water. But there may be more on the way according to the forecast.

No monkeypox has been reported in Guerrero, but dengue remains a concern. Something to remain aware of.

Saw a couple of turtle nests on Playa Principal this morning, but both sets of tracks looked like they were both made by very small turtles. Odd. I hope conservationists got the eggs and not poachers.

Lots of businesses are currently closed on the waterfront and around town. Some take vacations and breaks at the end of the tourist season, of course, but others may not reopen. Our summer tourist season left a lot to be desired, and each year it seems our tourists have less purchasing power. Tell your friends about us, please. Help us to spread the word and attract some better-spending visitors. We promise to treat them well. B-)

[image]A simple and quiet but very scenic pet-friendly vacation getaway at Playa Blanca is El Manantial. Two one-bedroom bungalows and two houses, one with three bedrooms and the other with six, located on the beach. All bedrooms have A/C, and there is a lovely pool and lounge area in front of the beach. Perfect for honeymooners.

In Canada, the US and Mexico, wages have not kept up with inflation over the last several years, so it is not surprising that tourists have less purchasing power. Yes, my 401k and IRA accounts have gone up, but a lot of that is due to the depreciating dollar. When I take money out, I get to pay capital gains tax without any adjustment for inflation. Unless I beat the rate of inflation plus the capital gains tax, my purchasing power goes down, which it has.

Note: When you withdraw money from a Traditional IRA or a before-tax 401(k), the enire withdrawal is taxed as earned income. If the IRA were a Roth IRA or if the money in the 401(k) were after tax, then the withdrawal is tax free. If the funds are in what the IRS calls a non-qualified account (aka regular taxable account), then you would pay capital gains on the difference between your purchase price and the sales prices, minus any commissions. The tax rate on earned income is typically higher than the tax rate on capital gains.

You are right and I misspoke. Ordinary income tax is paid when withdrawals are taken from pretax retirement accounts. I haven't had to tap my pretax accounts yet and therefore haven't had to pay those taxes. In a few more years that will end; I will be required to take an RMD, a required minimum distribution and pay the tax on it. So far, I've been paying capital gains on after tax investments that have been sold to fund our retirement. And yes, I'm not thrilled with proposals to basically double the capital gains tax rate or to tax unrealized gains.

Relax. That proposal is only meant for those "households if their net worth exceeds $100 million." Of course, in this same article, we read that people with net worths of over $100 million are not happy. "This path leads to bread lines & ugly shoes," Tesla CEO Elon Musk posted on his own private social network venue formerly known as Bitter, ooops, Titter, uh, (upper class) TWIT-ter. Are you surprised!

If perchance you happen to be lucky enough to be in that rarified economic strata, congratulations! But not to fear, should Ms. Harris win the White House, the Republicans will chain themselves together and lie down across the Capital Rotunda to stop this heinous provision from ever making its way into the Internal Revenue Code. "No Billionaire Left Behind," is their motto!

Withdrawing from IRA's/401Ks is not a capital gain. I wish it was.

My wages, plus investments have clearly outpaced inflation.
If one does not have investments, then your most likely down on inflation.
There is glimmer of HOPE for many this week>>>$2.99 gas today, 79 cents a pound chicken, $8.99lb T-bones, 1.30/gallon Propane, I could go on, My favorite wine $6.99/bottle not seen since 2018.
All in all you have to give some credit to the current administration. Other countries have suffered inflation much worse.
After the route COVID was I am 100% thankful.B-)

When we arrived back in April this year we were shocked to see how much restaurant prices had shot up in under a year. Couple that with a stronger peso and a weaker cdn dollar and most meals were the same price or more than going out to eat at home and we already live in one of the highest cost of living areas of Canada, it is pretty hard to shock us with prices. Unfortunately for our next couple of trips we have decided to go explore new countries where our budget will stretch a bit further and can see somewhere new. We will definitely be back to Zihua and area but we can’t be the only people that had sticker shock when visiting this past season.
