Alantic Bluefin Tuna

In recent past I have pursued Yellowfin Tuna offshore following the favorable Mexican Atlantic Ocean currents with very good success. Heard rumors that a few Bluefin “Atlantic” Tuna were caught offshore near Zihua but when I visited the fish markets locally to gain information only Yellowfin were available for sale.” I prefer to catch my own”. I have been in contact with a few local fisherman when visiting Zihua and south along the coast but none reported any success for Bluefin. If anyone can share reports of successful catch’s for Bluefin specifically, please let me know. The international commercial harvest records do not separate varieties of tuna so their data does not aid in my research. Earlier, when the migrating Bluefin were present in the Mediterranean the previous May, I was rewarded with good catches south of Mallorca, Spain and the adventure igniting my desire to pursuit the Atlantic variety of Bluefin and I would sincerely appreciate any info to aid in my quest and future destination(s) along the mid Alantic coast.
Warmest Regards

My understanding is any Bluefin catch would be purely incidental since Zihu is not their home range. I have never seen one caught in 30 years.

They aren't allowed to use the Panama Canal?

No, the fee is too expensive.,

They have to go around the Horn of South America. B-)

Correction..my sport fishing buddies have advised me my geography was in error and that I ment to say was Pacific Bluefin tuna and the destinations along the Pacific coast. Mind you the jovial ribbing I received was robust and entertaining. I will endeavor in the future to review my geography before clicking send and yes allow my piscatorial comrades an opportunity to proof read and edit if necessary.

Not a problem, Rudy. I suspected as much, but the Pacific Bluefin Tuna are indeed a rare catch here since you have to go out so far to get them while everything else is within 25 miles or so of the coast.

Thanks, been invited to crew and assist on a research vessel sampling the pelagic waters offshore from the Baja to to the equator and west to the Galapagos. An exciting endeavor indeed followed up with sport fishing off .Mexico Pacific side in pursuit of Bluefin Giants along with a return to the fascination Hemingway ignited in my youth. Thanks again.

Sounds like a fascinating adventure awaits you! Congratulations!

Your journey may find you discovering a mysterious little atoll seemingly in the middle of nowhere called Clipperton Island. It has a history, the stuff movies are made of.

In fact Pacific Bluefin Tuna are a little known conservation success story-various Mexican gov't departments (and the military) have combined to rigorously enforce catch limits.

Once individul boat limits are reached that's it's No Mas Aleta Azul-combined with net pens near Ensenada the market is now flooded with BFT and populations have exploded to the point where southern California party boats which once haunted the Baja coast often don't leave California waters deciding instead to jig all night long for some truly huge specimens.
