Folks in our region slept well Thursday night with their windows open and the fan on low. It got so cool we had to sleep under a light sheet. A rare treat so far during this not-very-rainy season. Although it was still somewhat cloudy at dawn, the sky cleared and a nice gentle breeze made for another picture-postcard-perfect day in paradise. How wonderful to be here!

I'm sorry to report our Congreso del Estado de Guerrero approved the Reforma Judicial hastily rushed through our Congreso Nacional this week by the president's party, Morena. It looks like we're going to have politicians instead of judges, dominated by the political party in power who is currently acting like a dictatorship with the way this Constitutional Reform was passed, and Mexico's justice system is going to fall further into the abyss of injustice and corruption. A damn shame. No debate. No negotiation. Morena simply used their power of majority rule to impose what they wanted very undemocratically. Not what we're used to or expected from Morena. There went their moral superiority. Now the fun and games begin. Once the new reforms go into effect, foreigners will want to go out of their way to avoid courts since they will be used as scapegoats, like MAGA does with migrants in the States, because one of the propagandistic complaints used by Morena to justify their actions was that corrupt judges favored foreigners and people with money.

Decorations for the celebrations of Mes de la Patria have been put up along the waterfront. This weekend will be a long weekend with Monday as a national holiday, and many schools will close the following Tuesday even though it isn't an official holiday. There will be a parade downtown on Monday around 8 in the morning.

[image]If you're looking for a truly relaxing B&B lodging overlooking the jungle in La Ropa, I highly recommend Casa Arcoíris. The view of the sunset over the treetops from their pool is breathtaking, and the peace and quiet will relieve you of any stress. Five comfortable suites with air conditioning, TV, and Wi-Fi access at this LGBTQ-friendly lodging make it somewhat exclusive and definitely enchanting. Mention ZihuaRob's and get a discount.

Rob, I am generally about 50/50 on your views of local and federal government, but on this one unfortunately you are most likely 100% correct. This was bad, really bad, down and dirty bad, lower than a snake belly BAD....Judges in Lucha Libre mascaras, Should be a sight.

However judges get on the bench, it can be a mixed bag of corruption. Elected judges will be more responsive to the public but their decisions can be more political. Appointed judges can disregard political pressure but are too often deep in the pockets of special interests. One only has to look at the US Supreme Court to see how bad that can be. I don't know which avenue is worse.

With this so-called Reforma, Morena has taken solid control of the judiciary, a judiciary that was the only counterweight to the excesses of Presidente Andrés Manuel López Obrador, since his party, Morena, already controls both chambers of Mexico's Congreso. The great majority of the population that blindly supports Morena also blindly believes the propaganda painting Mexico's judges as corrupt. While it's doubtless that some are threatened by criminals and others lack ethics, the great majority are hard-working people trying to do the best with what little they have. Police often beat and torture suspects. Prosecutors often do a pitiful job of building their cases, possibly on purpose. Judges can't allow the rights of the accused to be so profoundly trampled, leaving no recourse but to dismiss cases. This is the ammunition Morena uses to label judges as corrupt, ignoring humans rights abuses and omissions of the law by prosecutors. And Morena's uninformed followers accept it. The presidenta electa Claudia Scheinbaum appears to support the imposition of this Reforma, claiming that's what we voted for in the June elections. A comment that bodes poorly for her 6-year term. Like many Mexicans, I'm in favor of judicial reform, but replacing judges with politicians has nothing to do with addressing the problems that need fixing. It'll simply strengthen Morena's hold on power by giving them control over judges that currently no political party has, creating a new dictatorship.

Just asking, wasn't Morena an ""alternative" to years of PRI abuse?

That was part of its sales' pitch, but since it's where the action is, priistas have been flocking to Morena where they get pardoned for their sins as long as they swear fealty to Morena.

Just when you think politics couldn’t get more ‘cutthroat’.
