¡Qué DiferenZIHa!
While millions of people across Mexico participated in the Simulacro Nacional at 11:00 A.M. this Thursday, most people didn't. As we were standing in the street looking around, a couple of tourists walked up and they said they hadn't even heard of it. It's only been on every national news show and in every national media every day for over a couple of weeks now. Amazing how many people seem to be oblivious to so much going on around them. I guess that's okay if you're on vacation.
What a difference from a month ago! No tourism to speak of. Many restaurants, shops and businesses are simply closed. The news reports that the OCVIZ is working to attract tourists for the slow season, but I ain't buying it. Busloads of people with no money to spend ain't what I call tourism. One of the two cruise ships that had been scheduled to visit before the end of the year apparently cancelled. But the condos and luxury homes keep sprouting up on our hillsides and coastal areas along with the unplanned urban growth in our towns. It defies all logic, but whatever it is, it ISN'T sustainable.
Now La Saladita is looking more and more like the old Troncones as people keep searching for places like Zihuatanejo used to be. Lots of growth out there, and the promise of better services from the municipal government. But Troncones is still quite a nice escape from the hustle and bustle of a city. Excellent lodging, delicious restaurants and warm, friendly people in a spectacular coastal setting.
