Why Mexico Is Eliminating Independent Watchdog Agencies

As much as I adore Mexico and visit often, I fear I will never fully understand the political process. One item that seems blatantly apparent in the article is that the claim of saving US$5 billion is a fairy tale.

"But Jorge Cano, an economist and public finances analyst at Mexico Evaluates, a public policy research group, said that Morena’s estimates of $5 billion savings are 'beyond the realm of reality.'

Mr. Cano’s group said that the seven agencies received $238 million this year from the government, representing only about 0.06 percent of Mexico’s annual federal budget."

When such organisms become personal fiefdoms, then the Morena government goes after them. It's what they accused the judiciary of becoming, and it's apparently the same here in the case of INAI and the other organisms mentioned. The INAI itself became an example of red tape hell, bloated salaries and corruption. The functions of each organism that is disappearing are being absorbed by existing agencies who already carry out similar functions. The functions of INAI will be provided by the Secretaría de la Función Pública, the agency in charge of responding to charges of corruption and providing transparency. The functions of the Comisión Reguladora de Energía and the Comisión Nacional de Hidrocarburos will be provided by the Secretaría de Energía. Morena is apparently streamlining the government, actually DOING the job that the USA's Insurrectionist twice-impeached president-elect entrusted to his billionaire pals (wink wink). I predict Mexico's streamlining will actually benefit Mexico while the Insurrectionist's streamlining will only benefit him and his wealthy pals.
