Monday we enjoyed another cool morning here in Zihuatanejo. Must've gotten down to at least 22°C. Cool to locals, but still warm to most visitors. But there weren't many visitors in town today. None of the local shops did much business, many restaurants didn't even bother to open. Como dice el dicho, ni las gallinas ponen los lunes.

With or without visitors, Monday was still an absolutely picture-postcard-perfect day of beautiful weather, and the colors at sunset even without clouds were spectacular. Anyone who was paying attention would agree.

The pilgrimages of the Guadalupanos has begun. Our mayor has asked that they not launch explosives into the sky while marching to local churches. While most of us agree that would be nice if there were no exploding skyrockets, we also know that unless fines are imposed on infractors, absolutely no one is going to change what they've become accustomed to doing, very unfortunately. They're like children with their big skyrockets. They think it's fun. By December 12 many of us downtown residents and our pets suffer shell shock.

Light tourism, I wonder how much damage your customs people did for the 2 year period they went for a money grab. Even though they didn’t get any money from me they wanted to change me an import tax for the silver jewelry my wife had that we bought there from previous trips. It was taking close to a couple of hours to clear a plane or two while everyone was standing waiting in a hot room. If my first time to Zihua was during that period it would have been the last. Bad sign if expats were intentionally taking flights that connected in CDMX to avoid customs in Zihua. Zihua keeps shooting itself in the foot. Then there is the no dogs on the beach thing, how many more does that scare off? At least they seem to have gotten the airport situation somewhat under control for the past year. I know that orange guy with the red hat is at fault for all of this but still.

I couldn't agree with you more. These types of easily remedied problems our local government unfortunately keeps ignoring because it's only focused on where to put more cement, simulating their job instead of actually doing it and administrating our municipio.

While not all our visitors are big spenders, we don't receive so many visitors that we can afford to be running some of them off by the bad experiences at Aduana, or making them feel like criminals by searching their personal belongings when they arrive to the beach, or telling them their furry family member isn't welcome when more people than ever travel with their dogs.

Warm saludos y abrazos.

They tried to shake me down during my last arrival.

Arrived with a new small kitchen appliance and shared receipt when requested. He then said I had to pay $100 usd fine. I told him the value as listed on the receipt was under $200 usd. He said the $200 rule only applied to clothes. I told him BS and to call his Supervisor. He said he was the Supervisor and I again said BS, I know the Supervisor. All of this was in Spanish. He then said ok, I am giving you a break. I thanked him, walked away, then felt bad for his next victim if they did not speak English or is a newbie to Z. What a sad racket!

What a good thing that you speak Spanish well enough to win an argument and that you know your stuff. ¡Bravo!

This last trip, I put my wife's jewelry in two separate bags in my pockets so no x-ray. We got the green light, but as usual that doesn't really matter and they wanted to have a look. They really are crooks.

On the other hand, playing dumb can work too. We were driving the road to Alamos in Sinaloa in our '96 Pontiac Grand Prix, when a cop pulled out from his hiding spot and came after us, lights flashing. I wasn't speeding or committing any other infractions, so figured it was a shakedown. As he approached the car, I said to my wife: "We don't speak or understand a word of Spanish....not one word."
After firing a few questions at us and not getting any intelligible responses except good-natured shrugs, he gave up.
To his credit, I understand enough Spanish to know he did not threaten us with arrest, or demand money.
When I explained the encounter to our hotel host in Alamos, he guessed that the cop was on the look-out for older American cars with foreign license plates, to ensure they were not stolen, or in the country illegally.
