I've been hearing about dengue fever?! however I am a long time visitor to Zihua (40 plus years) and have never had a problem with bites...the hotel sprays regularly and the bats on their rounds at dusk seem to help. but of course the climate has changed so if anyone has advice your input is appreciated.

Well, we are in the tropics. Dengue is a virus spread by mosquitoes. Many in Zihua have been infected.

There is no vaccine for dengue. Symptoms can be treated but there is no cure. Some people recover quickly. Some people die.

Spraying a bit of mosquito repellent on oneself seems to be a small inconvenience compared to being infected with the dengue virus.

Hola Maggie. Dengue has been prevalent this year. The city has done very little spraying. Fortunately with the end of the rainy season the incidence of dengue drops quite drastically. If you plan to be sitting somewhere outdoors where there are mosquitos, then repellant is a good idea, but if you're just out walking, as long as you're moving mosquitos don't usually bother you. They're not like the africanized bees that will chase you for blocks.

I have had homeowner’s insurance and car insurance for 40 years and “never had a problem”.

I know two people who have had dengue and one who has had malaria. I don’t want to have either of those problems.

I will continue to buy home insurance, buy car insurance, and use mosquito repellent “insurance.
