The Insurrectionist insists on being stupid, believing that tariffs hurt the nations he imposes them on. Mexico has already found new markets for the goods that it expects to be affected, and Gringos will still want their favorite products. So it means folks in the USA will be paying more, not less, for many of their favorite foods and drinks along with cars, electronics, clothing and many other goodies folks up there are accustomed to buying for much less than they'll soon be paying.
I'm more concerned about repercussions against Gringos by folks pissed off about his racist measures, including increasing the suffering of already suffering and hard-working people. I'm already seeing anti-Gringo comments on social media. Those folks all have family and friends, and it only takes a few of them to lose their cool to make Gringos feel unwelcome and at risk in Mexico.
No patriot should be obeying the orders of the ILLEGITIMATE PRESIDENT. Thank the GOP for the USA's current constitutional crisis.

Amerika Uber Alles?
Elon Musk makes a Nazi salute at the coronation and the U.S. media yawns.
And before you say, "But he meant to say that I give you my heart," know that he knew exactly what he was doing. He is not stupid enough to believe that he was just making an awkward motion that was misinterpreted. He was sending a very strong signal to the far right factions around the world that he has been supporting.
We is so screwed. "Never Again," has become, "Why Not Again?" Concentration camps? Mass deportations? Invading other countries to steal their land and resources? Hey, if Putin and Xi can do it, why can't Agent Orange?
Remember the words of Louis Rukeyser: "This country [the U.S.] is so fundamentally strong it can survive its leaders." Dear God, I hope he was right.
I sure wish I could move to Zihuatanejo right now! Some friends are saying that they are hoping to survive the next four years. I bite my lip and say nothing, knowing that the Supreme Court is already cooking up ways to let him stay in power for life, just like his idols, Putin and Xi.

Hey Rob, a month or so ago I posed the question that perhaps there were less Gringos from the US there in Zihua due to possibly being concerned about how they might be viewed while the Orange Turd reeled off his racist commentary. Now that he got inaugurated, maybe this is becoming true. I have a group of 11 of us gringos from the US coming down in a month and I know they are going to start asking about this concern, so keep us posted on what you hear or see down there, then I can decide what I want to tell them or not tell them.
It sickens me to think that we are now targets due to the disgusting racist crap the Orange Turd spouts out, along with his Nazi sympathizing little buddy. And to think we have at least 4 more years, likely more once Roberts figures out how to make him permanent, of his bull crap to endure. I have many great amigos here in the US, who work their asses off, pay their taxes, are kind to all of our family members, and are just a real joy to be friends of and it just frosts my ass to think they might just disappear from here one day due to the lunatics running our government now.

Aren’t you glad you’re not in Quebec? Your greetings would be “Bonjour, Hello, Buenos días, eh”.
As an aside, I have asked a few locals about “Buen día” and “Buenos días”. It actually started after I was graciously corrected a couple of times after greeting a person with “Buen día.
The explanation I was given was that “Buenos días” is a greeting of “Good morning” and “Buen día” is a departure comment like “Have a good day.”
Has anyone else had a similar explanation?

This is now a burning question, right up there with when will we invade Mexico. I mean, we have to be able to tell the troops how to greet someone and then wish them a good day upon departure, right?

Their use is interchangeable. It's a matter of custom. Traditionally, formally and possibly most correctly we use "¡buenos días¡" as the standard greeting. But then some people got to thinking, "why plural if it's only one person?" or simply "why plural?" since in other languages the singular is used. So during recent years we hear and use much more frequently "¡buen día!" You'll also hear similarly but much less frequently "¡buena tarde!" and "¡buena noche!" The singular forms are considered popular, localismos, though they seem more common in Mexico and Argentina than other Spanish-speaking countries

I recall having seen

Thirty years ago, in the pre-gringo era, in the Troncones area, “restaurante” was commonly spelt “restaurant”. It seems that this was not an anglicization. One of the first people with a sign ran out of space so just dropped the “e”. Others followed suit.
In La Majahua, pigs were commonly referred to as “porqui”, but not in nearby Troncones. It seems that decades ago, someone from La Majahua was somewhere and saw a Porkie the Pig cartoon and brought the word back.
And some might remember a restaurant on Calle Cuauhtémoc in Zihuatanejo with the name “Restaurante Económico Caro”. What? “Economical, Expensive Restaurant”?
Nope. Another example of a sign painter running out of room, so “Carol” didn’t get her whole name on the sign for her economical restaurant.
Another of my favourites… I saw this in Sonora

What law precisely is being enforced when ICE separates children who are U.S. citizens from their parents or separates a family that have lived and worked in the USA for over 3 decades? Being undocumented isn't a crime. Seeking asylum isn't a crime. Using the CBP One app that regulated court hearings for asylum seekers isn't a crime.
See, the Insurrectionist ergo Illegitimate President is making a show of cruelty for his very base base who cheer this crap. Folks who are apparently so gullible and brainwashed they can't be bothered with FACTS, TRUTH and much less with MORALITY. Presidents Obama and Biden expelled people constantly, sometimes with questionable methods and results, but it wasn't televised for the very base audience who likes to watch an already suffering people suffer more. First of all I think fLumpTy-DumPty is one low-life SOB on MANY levels. But, the threat of Tariffs is a more than likely to be implemented than not.
I'm seeing a LOT of responses here that do not have a clear perspective of the fiscal circumstances. The economy of Mexico is about 15th in the World if I remember correctly and Canada's is 10th. California's economy alone is 5th in the World and that's just one state.
There is not a chance in hell either Mexico or Canada could recreate markets to replace California as a consumer of their products, much less the entire US.
Personally I'll be really pissed if comes to that 'cause the America I value is the one that "runs" it's business, but doesn't need to forcefully dominate the markets.

There are two rules governing a trade war:
1. Nobody ever wins a trade war.
2. See rule no. 1.
Trump thinks that Mexico/Canada will simply roll over and not retaliate, perhaps because of his otherworldly mind-meld superpowers. And you would think his billionaire buddies would whisper in his ear, but that might mean losing privileges at Mar-eh!-Lago. It's not an especially difficult concept but it's lost on Trump.

Also, consider the rationale for the threatened tariffs. They are not because of alleged unfair trade practices by Mexico or Canada. They are because of alleged, “Drugs and illegal immigrants flooding into our country” and Trump wants Mexico and Canada to stop those. Drugs would not be flowing into the US if Americans were not consuming the drugs.
As Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said, approximately 1% of the drugs and illegal immigrants in the US cross the Canada/US border.
It seems that Trump is acknowledging that his country is incompetent at protecting its own borders and expects other countries to do it.

Isn't it the responsibility of the "accepting country" to monitor and control its own borders? When we travel from Canada, or from Mexico, to the US, we are not required to stop at customs & immigration of the country we're leaving. Why should Canada spend a nickel to "fortify" its border, just to appease a pathological liar and malignant narcissist?
If anything, Canada may have to fortify its borders from the throngs fleeing the USA.

The only fly in the ointment here is that this particular adversary might very well have you and much of the rest of the world fall down into the hole of his making. Everyone loses in a global trade war. Let's see, the last time this happened was in the 1930's which also saw the rise of authoritarianism, bellicosity, and Nazi salutes, however coyly done in order to allow for someone to claim that it really wasn't a Nazi salute. It puzzles me why you enjoy vacationing in Mexico when your “team” is so gung-ho to deport them back home and ruin their families. Human decency is not about politics but somehow your “team” has found a way to make it all about politics. Try some kindness towards others from other countries, you might even enjoy it, dare I say.
I don't fault Craig for his conservative leanings. They aren't Trumpian, as far as I can tell, and he genuinely seems like a good guy. And I understand where the "blue team" has strayed far and wide from their path, especially with the 2019 DNC Primary where, when it looked like Bernie had it locked up, the DNC stepped in and ostensibly imposed Hillary, who simply had too much hubris and lost to one of the most despicable humans in the USA. So I'll stick my hand in the fire for Craig and declare him kind "towards others from other countries". People like him aren't the problem, and a conservative party is necessary for balance as long as both sides are willing to reach out to the other and make compromises, the way things used to work.
I have to say I was shocked reading nasty comments in social media to Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde of the Episcopal Church made by the Insurrectionist and his cult followers, but I was encouraged by the responses to their hatred and their threats, especially by atheists like me defending her. I was baptized Episcopalian, and I'm grateful for such an open and welcoming Christian church, especially with a female bishop who speaks truth to power by preaching compassion, though the church loses me at all the god worship stuff. But when atheists defend an Episcopalian Bishop, she must be doing something right to reach out to others and to cross divides. That's what we need more of right now. I see no MAGAts reaching out to anyone.

No place is perfect. However, I will suffer the slings and arrows of California any day of the week over the many other locations in the United States. By all means, please feel free to relocate to Texas. You would be very much at home there. My only hope is that you or any of your loved ones don't need reproductive care.

Off to the racist races we go, this just in from Kentucky regarding the KKK distributing flyers statewide. Maybe a move to Kentucky, Craig? I’m sure life there will be much better and more “Team Red” than California, and I’m certain that then there will be zero crime….no wonder you are seeing the gringo talk Rob.
“ The flyers show a cartoon of Uncle Sam kicking at a family of five, including a baby and two young children. Uncle Sam is holding a document which says “Proclamation” and states: “We need your help. Monitor and track all immigrants. Report them all.”

Please don't make erroneous assumptions about my friend, Craig. Or about Kentuckians, the lovely state where I was born. They know who picks their crops, carves their beef, mows their lawns, and cares for their children.
That McCarthyist appeal to turn in migrants is likely going to backfire on the Insurrectionist. Polls show most citizens don't agree with deporting anyone but actual violent criminals. And yes, shades of 1938 and Kristalnacht.

Good call Rob, indeed an erroneous assumption and for that I apologize to both of you. The Orange Turd unfortunately brings out the rage in many of us who enjoyed a pretty darn peaceful time during the last 4 years. I need to remind myself that this is how it will be for at least 4 more years and try to extend a hand to those on
“ team red “ whenever possible. But it might not be easy to do…….just sayin’. After watching Gilligan do the nazi salute twice, it got my blood boiling. Now it’s time for a cerveza or six…

Hey Rob, thanks for the comments but they will have to try harder to insult me. I find these comments very entertaining. Gavin Newsom in 28, I will do a write in for Ted Nugent.
"Seek first to understand, then to be understood." -- Stephen R. Covey
Heaven knows, I have been trying to understand the political right for decades now, ever since the rise of people like Speaker of the House Newt Gingrinch and provocateur Rush Limbaugh began their tirade of vitriol and hatred and bellicosity against the political left.
Rob says that Craig, "genuinely seems like a good guy." And yet, he is willing to vote for someone who has repeatedly called for violence against a sitting president and referred to blacks as "subhuman mongrels" mimicking the KKK and Nazi rhetoric. He also incited his followers to, "go berserk on the skulls of Democrats." If suggesting that he would vote for Ted Nugent is a joke, my apologies, I don't get it.
My one brother-in-law has mouthed similar hateful words, often targeted against Blacks, ever since I have known him. Many years ago, I asked him, "Well, if the left is so dangerous and wants to destroy the United States, what should be done?" Without missing a beat, he answered, "There will be bloodshed."
My other brother-in-law once said nonchalantly that, "Ah, we should just kill all the liberals." On another occasion, he remarked that the United States should take over Mexico because it is a failed state. Many other Republicans now are suggesting similar actions.
These are "good people?" I want to understand how these can be "good people." Personally, what I see is the Two Minutes Hate from 1984. I see the ritualistic savagery and hatred from The Lord of the Flies. What I don't see is any kind of Christian behavoir as described in the teachings of Jesus in the New Testament. And this as the Republicans market themselves as the Party of God.
And finally, we have someone at the most televised event of our political calendar making a Nazi salute. He then brilliantly claims that anyone who says that it was a Nazi salute is just seeing Hitler everywhere. Of course, the salute was a godsend to those on the far right who he has been supporting. They are absolutely delighted. Musk knew exactly what he was doing. He is not that stupid to know how his actions would be interpreted.
So, please, is there anyone who can explain how these are "good people?" What kind of world are we creating for ourselves? Where are the goals of creating a more perfect union, establishing justice for all, and promoting the general welfare? How much bloodshed is in our future?

In children you call this kind of behavior "acting out." In 53-year old trillionaires, you call it "Musking" perhaps. Lest he get too comfy at Mar-a-Lago, somebody needs to let him know what happened to Rasputin.

OK boomer. Your lofty ideals are too quaint and so last century and lost in today's world. Now we're ruled by rightwing media whose whole existence is predicated on spewing propaganda and gaslighting, wholesale lies and bullshit, constantly pushing emotional buttons that rewire the brains of its dimwitted audience. And it works spectacularly well - propaganda has become an exacting science. Add to that social media that thrives on clickbait ('Trump exciting, Biden boring. Go Trump!') and we're screwed. Unfortunately most people vote not on the basis of logic and reason but for emotional reasons. While not for a minute am I suggesting any government censorship. but as long as Fox and social media continue to vomit out their garbage - and there's a willing and gullible audience - then I see no way out of this mess.

I agree with you except on one point: the steady stream of right wing propaganda is indeed "so last century". The only difference is the vehicle used to deliver it.
Mussolini used it to great effect to propel his Fascist agenda in 1920s Italy. Hitler admired Mussolini's methods and adopted them into the 1930s Nazi propaganda machine. "Flooding the zone with bullshit" is not new.

I'm sorry if I implied that propaganda is new. I'm well aware of its history going back, well, forever. I only meant that with IT, analytics, and computer power it's lately been refined to a science.

I can’t help but wonder whether you have ever studied Marxism.
There are no federal politicians in the US who are Marxists. They might have studied Marxist political and economic theory. But that doesn’t mean they adopted it.
There are none who are socialists.
Even Bernie Sanders could not be considered a democratic socialist, or even a social democrat.
It seems that in the US, terms like Marxist and socialist are used as one-size-fits-all pejoratives with little understanding of their meaning.

It's clear you have no idea what Marxism is. For the record I am nowhere near being a Marxist. And if I have to compromise my principles and integrity and join the completely irrational Maga Cult in order to be on the winning side, well, then I'd rather lose and keep my integrity.

They said this about Bush/Cheney too but it never happened. I don't think Captain Cheezepuff and his gang of thieves will do this, as repulsive as they are. That's when "normal" people would take up arms and carry out justice. (Yes, he tried it before but they nipped it in the bud.)

I would never put anything like that in writing but it is as I said before, very entertaining. The Ted Nugent comment was tongue in cheek about someone giving their political opinions when you don’t want to hear them. He is a great musician but I didn’t go to his concert to hear a bunch of political bs, could care less if it’s blue or red. By the way you have no clue how I voted and never will. I have noticed over the years that the older someone gets the more they believe their opinion is fact and they loose their filter and friends. Hopefully I can learn by example.

I do notice greater Xenophobia among right-wingers, and proponents of American Exceptionalism, one of the corniest phrases ever invented--a phrase meant to question the character those who are not "True Believers."
