Safety near Troncones

Hi all, I hope you can help me out with some advice/information. We have been coming to Ixtapa/Zihua for decades with friends, but now are planning a trip with our extended family of children and grandchildren, and are considering renting a large home in the area of Troncones, Ixtapa, or Zihua, or somewhere between them. My question - is it safe to rent a home in the more isolated areas outside of those communities? We just came back from two weeks in Ixtapa where we felt very safe, but have heard warnings about more rural or isolated areas. Also, if anyone has advice about where to rent a home with at least 6 bedrooms, preferably 7 or 8, for 13 people, would appreciate that as well. KC from Burnaby

Check with the people at Casa Ki and Casa Kitty right across the street (same owners) or with the people at Casa de la Sirena. They may be able to accommodate your group. And you'll be fine at either place. No need to go any further out in the boonies where you might feel nervous.

We’ll be at Casa Ki next month Rob. I’ll tell Tina you sent us. I first found the bungalows right here on one of your semi daily posts. We’ll also be in Zihuatanejo (though I don’t know where yet) for a couple of days first. If I see you on the street I’ll buy the first round.

(Full disclosure, I have a vacation rental home on the beach in Troncones.)
I used to live in North Burnaby, New Westminster, 4th & Burrard, Richmond, South Surrey, White Rock… you name it.
My family vacationed annually both in Ixtapa and in Zihuatanejo beginning in 1982.
I now live part time south of Courtenay on VI and part-time in Troncones.
I have owned property in Troncones since 1996. I have had plenty of opportunities to sell. If I didn’t feel safe here, I would have taken an offer. But they will have to carry me out of here when I die happily of old age.

Thanks so much. That is reassuring. Is there a place I can look at the house you rent in Troncones? We need a big one, as we will be 13 people (9 adults and 4 children).

My place would not be suitable for your group. I designed it toward two couples or a small family.
Mexican families tend to “travel large”. A group your size would not be considered unusual, so many of the properties in Troncones can accommodate larger groups.
Rob’s website has numerous listings. My experience is that Rob does not do business with unscrupulous people, so I think that can give you some comfort as well.

Just joking, but how about those buildings across the street from the Hilton on the La Ropa road? Story we heard was they were built to house officers of the Marina, but we've seldom seen any evidence to suggest anyone lives there.

Even though i love Troncones; right now it is not safe at all. A friend of mine had his car stolen and belogings stolen just a few weeks ago; her girlfriend was groped in a bad way, this on the main highway between saladita and troncones. In total it was 5 cars stolen that day. You can check at the police department to confirm. Also just a few days ago a family was attacked and one of them died, there are 2 more in the hospital. You can verify this by googlin asalto ixtapa o muere turista ixtapa. (It did not allow me to paste the link)
I hope it gets better because troncones is my favorite beach but right now it is extremely dangerous. Not the town as such but getting there and leaving because there is only one way in and out and the Narcos know this.
I recommend you stay in playa larga near the airport, zihuatanejo or ixtapa inside a gated community until this changes.
