After a three-year absence we will be returning to Zihua next month.

What are your favorite restaurants? I especially enjoy huachinango/red snapper... what is the best restaurant for this?

Thanks!

Welcome back, tocayo.

I doubt there's a restaurant along our coast that doesn't excel in preparing huachinango. It's part of the local culture. My favorite restaurant for quality meals is La Porteña on the downtown waterfront at Plaza del Pescador.

Gracias, tocayo! Based upon your frequent positive comments about La Portena, it is high on our list of "To-Do" restaurants...first night!

I was hoping others might provide some recommendations, but I guess we will simply Yelp it. Based upon previous trips, it is difficult to go wrong when dining in Zihua!

Not exactly a restaurant, but one of our favorite "dinners" has always been a stuffed, baked potato at Papa Loca.

Good to know Papa Loca is still in business. I ate there about 5 years ago. Excellent food and unique experience sitting in a parking space next to a tire or auto mechanic shop. Thanks for the recommendation!

It's now called Mr. Papa Loca, and they moved around the corner. See the map on my Restaurants page to pinpoint their new location on Calle del Cartero.

The old one is still there, on the street, but the "new" one, has a great atmosphere, and the same menu and prices We really liked it when we went there

Better atmosphere than sitting in a parking spot next to an auto repair shop??? Haha! Gracias!

As Rob said, there are just so many great options for seafood, especially red snapper. Of course, much depends upon your budget and your personal tastes. How much are you willing to spend? How sensitive are your palates? Almost every single restaurant on the beaches will have huachinango on the menu. My personal experience is that the food in general in the beach restaurants is almost always exactly the same, a bit over priced and often over cooked.

If you tool around Centro, you will find some restaurants that should do the fish much more justice. Some are very reasonable. Some are more expensive, especially if they are positioning themselves as "fine dining."

Here are two seafood restaurants that are right next to one another but very close to downtown area where the prices are reasonable and the seafood is very fresh but a bit on the more greasy side (for my personal tastes):
Marisqueria El Colombiano (specializes in fresh oysters)
Marisquería El Sapeis
(These two are on the corner of Hemeregildo Galeana and Catalina González, just a few blocks from the Cancha.)

There are many others similar to this. If you want more "fine dining" choices where the prices will be higher and the quality should be higher, trundle on over to Calle Adelita by Playa la Madera. Walk down the street and see if Casanova's, El Arrayan, or La Gula pique your fancy. Mauricio at El Arrayan grills the meals on the street in full view of the patrons. There are other great options on the particular street.

Remember that the choices are endless. The reality just might be that simply strolling around and following your nose will give you the most rewarding experiences.

We love eating at Fonda Doña Licha near the Mercado Municipal!

Las enchiladas de pollo con salsa verde are a particular favourite, and they have seafood options as well:fish:

I recently had excellent, reasonably-priced meals (shirmp and fish) at Marisqueria Don Bieto in Dario Galeana (Circuito Principal 19, Dario Galeana).
