Momma whale and her calf were the star attractions again today in la bahía de Zihuatanejo. The Marina had to post a boat to keep guard over the whales from the wreckless wave-runners and other lookey-loo jerks who were practically running over the whales trying to see them and not respecting their space. Apparently momma whale recently gave birth, and she picked our bay to rest up for the long journey north and to teach her baby some whale basics. We even made international news!
There was a wonderful orchestra from Lázaro Cárdenas playing this evening at the Cancha Municipal. We stopped to listen to several songs, and we enjoyed what we heard, and so did the hundreds of other people there. It's nice to have an orchestra to listen to.
There was a tragic shooting last night in one of the downtown discos, and I believe the owner was killed. Unfortunately no one who has lived here and seen how our local government operates expects anything to change. Slowly our local government is intentionally turning Zihuatanejo into another Acapulco because it's a convenient way for politicians and their influential friends to make money and maintain political clout, unless we can change their minds and stop them, but of that I'm not hopeful. Our municipal police are nothing but adornments who mostly play bodyguard for local politicians. And we have no security camera system like we need. Instead of having a professional and well-trained local police force, the local government washes their hands of public security and lays responsibility and blame on the state and federal government. The Guardia Nacional and Policía Estatal are a nice back-up, but they aren't from here and don't know the local area and its quirks, and strangers in offices hundreds of kilometers away can't be expected to solve our local security problems. Wish I had better news on this matter, but that's where we are.
The waves have calmed down a bit making for easier swimming in Zihuatanejo's protected bay. Around a meter or so high along most of our coast outside the bay. The water temperature is still comfortable at between 26.5 and 27°C. There's been a delicious breeze helping to keep us comfortable even during the hottest part of the day. It isn't getting quite as cool at night as it had been, but we're still sleeping comfortably under a light sheet. And locals still walk around sighing and smiling for no apparent reason.
