Un OaZIHs en Un Paraíso
We awoke to a partly cloudy morning this jueves pozolero, but with high humidity and practically no breeze after a warm and humid night with no rain. La Canícula is kicking in. Much of Guerrero is under a heat warning with possible temps in the 40's, but here along the coast it remained relatively mild with a high of around 32°C, though the humidity and lack of breeze made it feel warmer. The mar de fondo picked up, but the piers remained open.
Tourist activity continues to increase slowly but surely, and the city has spent the past week sprucing up, painting and hanging things, turning Zihuatanejo into a Disneylandish place, I guess to make up for the natural beauty we continue to lose to all the cement. Some of the visitors arriving appear to have the purchasing power our community needs. If only we could get more of them. Still waiting to see if the Morelia flight makes a noticeable difference. The streets are certainly more crowded, and parking is becoming much more difficult.
Three and a half decades ago when I first moved here and helped my mother run a small handmade furniture shop on Calle Pedro Ascencio, Lupita and I were still novios. I'll never forget the day when she walked into the shop around 2 in the afternoon with a covered tray with a homemade hot meal she's brought from her home for me. I can recall the warm tortillas wrapped in embroidered cloth, delicious frijoles con crema, and some kind of chicken recipe with red sauce, a caldo de pollo con verduras, agua fresca de limón, and a special rice-pudding for dessert that her mother had made. To say I was astounded would be an understatement. I was already smitten, but this was unlike anything any other woman had ever done for me. And it became a daily treat for me until I started working at the Sheraton Hotel in Ixtapa. To this day, home-style Mexican cooking remains my absolute favorite, almost orgasmic in my appreciation of it. One more reason I feel like the luckiest Gringo in Mexico!
