NO KINGS DAY

by Mundo Bravo, Sunday, October 12, 2025, 12:42 (390 days ago)

So far all I can find in Zihua is a meeting at a local restaurant. Yet across Mexico Americans are gathering in public to show our non support for the trump regime. It seems that locally many are under the impression that foreigners can not demonstrate in public. What seems to be the case is that foreigners can not protest against the Mexican government. Expat are gathering in many places across Mexico not just this weekend but others in the past as part of the NO KINGS movement. I think we are too late for this weekend but I'm looking at starting a local chapter of Democrats Abroad to help focus our energy. Views ?https://www.democratsabroad.org/mx_events

I'm curious Rob, what are your thoughts on foreigners protesting in public in Mexico? Personally, I would not protest a political cause in another country as a foreigner. It nearly seems impolite, but then again I'm Canadian (stir the pot). Protest all you want legally if your Mexican in Mexico. Hey, call me crazy, but I wish only Canadians and legal immigrants could protest in Canada. Have a nice day and I hope the weather starts settling down..... we had snow yesterday so there's that.

Thou doth protest too much

OK, the real quote from Shakespeare is “Methinks the lady doth protest too much.” But one doesn’t have to be a lady for the quote to apply.

Also, I differentiate between a “protest” (against something) and a “demonstration” (typically in favour of something).

During my many years of tourist status in Mexico I never attended any kind of protest or any kind of demonstration. (Cooking demonstrations excepted.) The fact that I was on a brief vacation might have been a factor, but there were other factors.

Now as a permanent resident, I would not likely attend one regarding Mexican matters. I would consider myself insufficiently knowledgeable about the matters and I would not want to be seen as a foreigner telling Mexicans how to run things.

I might attend one regarding a topic involving my country of citizenship. If Canada were to elect as prime minister an autocrat who:

was trying to dismantle public health care;
destroying a health policy body like the Public Health Agency of Canada;
interfering with women’s reproductive rights;
removing rights of non cisgender persons;
politically prosecute and persecute those opposed to him saying, “I hate my opponents”;
and economically subjugate a longtime friendly neighbour among other things,

I think I would be there.

I think there is little likelihood of that. Then again, I guess many Americans thought the same thing.

No. I believe that becoming a non-resident of Canada is a very involved process that effectively requires severing all ties to Canada. No residence, no bank accounts, etc.

I am happy to remain a citizen and maintain my residence in Canada. I live in Canada about seven months of the year and live in Mexico about five months.

Rob, what do you think of Canadians protesting in Mexico because they think they know what everyone wants? I also spend about 5 months in Mexico, but I wouldn't go to a protest because it is not my country and I find it rude and kind of arrogant. Nothing like a smart Canadian or American (a US person) telling use Mexican people how to behave.That's just me. I would go to a cooking demonstration though. And full disclosure, I might have bought several "save the bay get rid of pier t shirts (for the cause) a number of years back, but even then I only wore them in Canada. Public Health care in Canada....give me a break. That's a whole other topic on another board. Thanks for this board Rob, I've been reading it for over 30 years??? Can't be.

Our visitors pay taxes here on every purchase, so they deserve to have their voices heard. In the former British colonies now known as the United States, "taxation without representation" was the battle cry for their revolution against King George III's monarchy, and I believe it's a tenet worth honoring. While they're banned from being involved with Mexican politicians and political campaigns (apparently except the foreigners in charge of Por Los Niños charity who allow themselves to be used for political purposes by local politicians), they're welcome to stand up against fascism, tyranny and authoritarianism, especially regarding contemporary events in our neighboring country to the north. They will find their cause is widely supported by most Mexicans.

The Only Thing Necessary For The Triumph Of Evil…

by Little Guy @, Tuesday, October 14, 2025, 11:34 (388 days ago) @ ZihuaRx

“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing“ Edmund Burke

I think of the topic of public participation as being more nuanced. It is easy for a person to not participate in collective action but behave in a similar manner individually. I have known many people who would never participate in some constructive collective action yet express their offensive views to anyone who will listen.

Some express their views so loudly that even others who don’t want to hear them are exposed to it. In Mexico I find this most commonly as some person in a restaurant, on transit, or in a public airport expresses their views in English or sometimes in French.

Be the change you want to see.

That is attributed to Mahatma Gandhi.

I, along with some others I know, do volunteer work during extended stays in Mexico. I do mine with dog rescue organizations, helping the homeless, hungry, ill, and injured. If there were a public event urging more support for spay and neuter programs, I would be comfortable participating.

Others do their volunteer work among the homeless and hungry people in conjunction with a local faith organization. I suspect that they would be comfortable participating in a public display for support of reducing homeless and hunger.

Yet others I know come to Mexico many months of the year and take from Mexico without making personal contributions to it.

I have a shirt that reads in part, “decoloniazate” (decolonize yourself). I wear it both in Mexico and in Canada. As a person who comes from non-Indigenous heritage, I believe it is important that I “decolonize myself” as it is important that colonized people reassert their pre-colonial autonomy.

Hey, call me crazy, but I wish only Canadians and legal immigrants could protest in Canada.

I won’t call you crazy but I will point something out to you.

Section 2 of the Canadian constitution says

2. Everyone has the following fundamental freedoms:

freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication.

It sounds like you want to limit Section 2 so that some people in Canada would not have the protections of the Canadian constitution.

I’m quite sure that Maxime Bernier would have common cause with you, but I doubt that even Pierre Poilievre would agree.

Just like I wish it read Every Canadian has the following fundamental freedoms. Hey that's just me. I really don't lose any sleep over it. Just a wish. I wish I was in Zihua.... Human Rights for All

by Little Guy @, Friday, October 17, 2025, 16:27 (385 days ago) @ ZihuaRx

I think in the opposite direction. Rather than limiting human rights to select individuals, I would like to see effective universal human rights in which everyone has freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication.

The weather is certainly nicer now than in the past couple of Octobers. I am finding the humidity to be much lower.

Prince Charles

by Little Guy @, Sunday, October 12, 2025, 15:49 (390 days ago) @ Mundo Bravo

Not every king is a despot. And most despots are not kings.

Amid 51st state taunts, King’s popularity in Canada grows

Polling firm Pollara surveyed some 3,400 Canadians between May 20 and 24 and found Charles's popularity in Canada has risen substantially since the last time the firm polled on the issue in 2022, with the number of people holding a positive view of the sovereign up some seven percentage points to 44 per cent and those with a negative view down 10 points to 23 per cent.

I kind of wish the organizers would call a spade a spade and say, “No Autocrats”, “No Despots” or something equally clear. But then they might be labeled “radical leftists” and Pamela Bondi might lock them up.

As you likely know, public demonstrations, strikes and road blockades are a normal and excepted and respected form of political action in Mexico. Public displays by Americans in Mexico against the trump regime show our friends, neighbors and host that not all Americans support the US trade war with Mexico That not all Americans support arresting and jailing Mexican workers in the US. That not all Americans support removing Mexican mothers from their children . That not all Americans support nameing Mexican citizens as terrorist allowing for US military intervention. That not all Americans support the Mexico City policy, That not all Americans support taxing remittiance to Mexican families.It shows Mexican citizens that many American stand with them and not against them. If you do support deporting workers or taxing remittance be sure to let your follow passengers on the combi know as well as the kitchen staff next time you eat out.

Getting a group together in a country that is not in the country of interest is a waste of energy and does noting but generate negative responses. It further proves to those that walk by how divided a nation can be.

I wonder whether you say the same thing about people in the US publicly showing their disapproval of Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, or the October 7 Hamas attack, or the killing of tens of thousands of Palestinians by Netanyahu’s right wing government.

Should citizens around the world be so insular that they don’t express their views?

Regarding proving how divided America is, the actions of private individuals cannot compare to those of a president who:

publicly proclaims that he hates his opponents;

politically prosecutes those who did their jobs successfully but not in accordance with his wishes, and;

declares that he welcomes the opportunity to fire thousands of public employees, focusing on “Democrat oriented” individuals.

It seems to me that “the land of the free and the home of the brave” is increasingly becoming the land of those who are looking over their shoulders.

These small groups of thoughtful, committed citizens might seem insignificant, but remember what Margaret Mead said,

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."

And what Lao Tzu said,

"A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step."

Those demonstrating against the emerging autocracy in the United States are small groups who are beginning long journeys.

Sigh. This is what large protests achieve:
-pressure on the administration who may be fearful that large-scale riots and violence will break out, although that likely is what Trump is hoping for
-pressure on Congressmembers who may be fearful of losing their cushy seats
-pressure on mainstream media who may realize that their soft coverage of Trump doesn't reflect the national mood
-pressure on the courts whose judges read the papers and watch cable news too
-reassuring people on the fence that they are not alone in their opposition to this authoritarian regime.
-reassuring the public that the 1st amendment still exists, however tenuously

Protests achieve all that and more.

Surprised no one is happy the orange man who gave up his billionaire lifestyle to save the world brokered peace in Gaza this week…

Trump may not be sleeping in his gauche Trump Tower but he has in no way given up his billionaire lifestyle. And now he's upgrading his faded Trump 757 plane for a new, plush Qatari 747. That's serious corruption. In fact he's used the office to corruptly enrich himself many times over just in the last 9 months. (And I bet you still think he donates his salary to charity. How naive of you.)

The "peace" in Gaza isn't peace but a ceasefire. Progress yes but not close to peace. Even Netanyahu isn't really on board, having skipped the signing ceremony. These tensions have been ongoing for thousands of years and are not likely to stop now, considering this "peace" plan is threadbare and doesn't address any of the underlying problems.

Think it through Surfdude. It's important.

How do mass protests "work"? With pressure. When enabling politicians don't get reelected. When life gets unbearable for enough people that they feel they have nothing to lose.

When do mass protests not "work"? When people become complacent. When they accept the unacceptable. When it's too late.

Trump is not in charge. He's a delusional, weak old man who is a bottomless pit of attention seeking. He's happily benefiting financially from the authoritarian regime but he's not calling the shots. There are far smarter and determined people who have studied the dismantling of a democratic government. Those are the ones I fear and against whom I protest.

They aren't appointed for life, but this is the current goal of the RAPEublicans and their oligarch masters, including Putin who has them dancing his song like marionettes, and useful idiots like you acting like this is normal and what you voted for.
