Winter began this Sunday!

It almost felt chilly this Sunday morning after one of the longest nights of the year. It probably got down to 20°C. Brrr! The ocean temperature is at 28.5°C, keeping our temperature mild along the waterfront, but even a block away it felt noticeably cooler until the sun came out and quickly warmed things up. We had a nice strong breeze for much of the morning that whipped up a few white caps in the bay, but not enough to affect swimmers.

The ocean remains extremely calm with waves around half a meter along the coast of the open ocean. Lots of people were enjoying the ocean in Ixtapa today. The beach was full of swimmers.

Last night's Desfile Navideña was much shorter than last year's. There wasn't so much time in between floats and dancers as last year. It made for a better overall experience. Lots of people were lining the streets and enjoying the parade, but then when it was over people were ready to go home or to dinner. The floats seem too big for our streets, better for 4-lane streets, which is less than half the route. I don't understand why they don't downsize them a bit to allow for a better visual spectacle along our small downtown streets. But it's certainly a nice benefit to live along Zihuatanejo's main parade route and not have to walk blocks to get here like most people. B-)

I expect local lodgings will be saturated from next week until the second week in January. Most of the downtown merchants and shopkeepers have been enjoying increased sales. Restaurants are full. Oxxo has a non-stop line. Parking is difficult. And even the airport is busy with people flying here from new destinations. The sights and sounds of a busy tourist industry for which we are grateful.

This Sunday night is the longest night of the year! Enjoy the long nights while they last.
