Un Nuevo Año para ApreZIHar La Vida
Damn! And just like that, a quarter century of this new millennia has passed. My how time flies when you're having fun.
There wasn't a spare meter on Playa Principal last night. It was jam-packed with people from one end to the other as was the entire waterfront and its plazas. People dancing everywhere and having a wonderful time. In my personal opinion, the fireworks ruined what was otherwise a great party. They were bigger and louder than ever.
But what really got my attention was the gunfire. More than I've heard in over 15 years. Including machine gun fire. From close by and from the surrounding hillsides, the gunfire was incessant and at times louder than the fireworks. It's like all the criminals came for vacation because they feel so welcome here. I've only seen one report locally of a bullet almost killing a sleeping child after it passed through their roof, though I suspect there must've been numerous similar incidents from the amount of gunfire. I saw a similar report where a woman in El Suchil in the municipio of Tecpan was injured in her leg by a cold bullet that ricocheted off the ground after falling through her roof. I know police showed up at several locations here AFTER the fact, but not only was there more gunfire than in previous years, there was no public information campaign warning against it as we've seen in other years. The gunfire had been declining year after year since about 10 or 15 years ago with the increased police presence, but this year we saw very little public security in comparison with past years. None along the waterfront. I hope everyone is all right, and that no one's pets suffered too much.
We were lucky no palapas caught fire. They weren't wetted down this year by Protección Civil as they'd done in previous years. We saw embers fall close by as well as on top of boats in the bay full with spectators.
Almost no businesses opened today. The line was long at Oxxo for coffee and breakfast snacks. The Mercado Municipal was also full of people nursing hangovers at the numerous food stalls there where you can get delicious breakfasts. Another of our wonderful secrets, so don't tell anyone.
The beaches weren't quite as full today as yesterday, but there are still plenty of visitors around. We still have Día de los Santos Reyes coming up on Jan. 6 when Mexican children are accustomed to getting presents, and everyone buys a Rosca de los Reyes to share. Whoever gets the baby Jesús buys atole and tamales for Día de la Candelaria.
No local lodging better represents the true magic of Zihuatanejo than the Hotel Catalina at Playa La Ropa. An oasis in a garden of paradise. Comfortable rooms with privileged views, delicious food at their restaurant, extremely warm and friendly staff, and the truest ambiance of old Zihuatanejo.
