The municipal government decided to hold a special running event this Saturday morning for Día de la Mujer with the start and finish line in Plaza del Artista, so at 5:30 this morning the leafblower operator was revving up his motor along the waterfront and in the plaza, and then the sound tech showed up about 6:30, and before 7:00 disco music was blasting from about 6 large speakers. When my wife asked one of the organizers from our upstairs window to please lower the volume and take into consideration the surrounding residences and hotels, she received a rude ¡REGRESA A TU PUEBLO! Not a good face for our municipal government.

¿CIUDAD DE TODOS? It doesn't appear to be. And I politely let the mayor know we weren't pleased.

We also weren't pleased, and neither were any of the boat captains, locals or visitors, due to a Guitarfest event at the pier this evening, at being unable to walk to the pier without having to use the unlit, urine-stenched, broken walkway that runs behind the offices of the Capitanía del Puerto. No passageway was left for non-attendees as had been left during the recent Sailfest events. BUMMER! Not cool at all.

There was huge wing-ding at the Cancha Municipal tonight with the competitions for the Carnaval royalty. The coronation will be next Friday. The contestants had their respective cheerleading sections waving flags and shouting support. The very beautiful girls representing different colonias were putting on quite a show. It looked like a lot of fun, as was the event for the Reina Gay last night.

The waves calmed down today and will remain calm for Sunday, but things pick back up on Monday, and by the middle of the week we should be seeing decent surfing conditions along the open coast with waves of a meter and a half. The water temperature has cooled to a nippy 26.7°, cool enough to keep a lot of costeños out of the water until it warms back up.

Don't forget to visit "Las Iguanas Bazar" in La Ropa next to Casa Tucanes this Sunday from 9 A.M. to 3 P.M. where you'll find a fun time, the wonderful works of local artisans and merchants, and lots of sustainable products.

Unos Eventos No ApreZIHados

It must be hard to balance events designed to attract more visitors, like Guitarfest, with keeping the locals happy. Would it be better if there was no one on the pier so that the locals could use it anytime they wanted or is the attraction for tourists worth impinging on local access? I am glad that nobody visits my hometown so that these decisions don’t have to be made and I can just complain about the damn raccoons tearing up my lawn.

I don't understand why you take such an extreme position. As I mentioned, Sailfest also had a huge event with music and dining the previous week, but they left a pathway open along the eastern side of the event so that locals, captains, pier workers, fishermen, and more tourists than those who attended the event for mostly foreigners could still easily access the pier without having to endanger their safety or smell putrid odors of urine. Why does my mentioning this bother you? Are we poor third-worlder locals supposed to worship foreign first-worlder visitors as faultless gods and mold our lives around the events scheduled mostly for foreigners albeit by well-meaning people including locals? Am I missing something here?

Perhaps you could be missing a municipal administration that establishes rules for use of the pier and aggressively enforces them. All uses of the pier should follow the same standards.

Like the current U.S. federal government, we have an unserious municipal government. Except ours seems to only task itself with two things: pouring cement from the mayor's husband's company, and organizing spectacles such as parties, cultural events, sporting events, and parades. I guess locals jumped to a conclusion that a problem had been solved after the Sailfest event.

I am sorry that my post came off as extreme because that was not my intention. I was trying to comment on what I perceived, as an observer, as a difficult decision that whoever manages the pier has to make between local access and events meant to promote visitations. And I didn’t realize that my commenting was so antagonistic and I apologize.

Nothing to apologize for. I simply didn't understand your comment. Thank you for explaining. Un saludo.

Guitar Festival

I have attended the Guitar Festival many times. I thought the location on the beach by the museum was the perfect place for the Guitar Festival. Wonder why they moved the location.

Because periodic high tides and waves flooded the area. BIG problem!!

This year it wouldn't have been any problem until yesterday (martes). Also, there've been no mosquitos or no-see-ums this year, an added benefit to a concert on the beach. ;-)
