Desfile ExZIHtosa
Even though the Carnaval parade didn't arrive to Plaza del Artista until 50 minutes after the official start time of 7:00 P.M., the crowd waited patiently. When the floats, music and dancers started arriving, the energy was high. Sometimes the wait between groups of dancers seemed quite long. Some didn't have floats, just dancers and ground-thumping music. I don't think anyone minded. The mayor was a dancer with the Alice in Wonderland group, the group behind the first float with the Reina and Princesas del Carnaval. I about wore myself out dancing on our rooftop with beer and tequila and other appropriate medications. I finally called it quits during one of the long pauses between dance groups. Oh darn, I totally missed the Oscars.
Monday morning was refreshing, but it only got down to about 20°C overnight. The ocean remains a cool (for us) 26.1°C, and the mar de fondo kicked in again today with waves along the open coast reaching about 2.5 meters in height, but not so bad in Zihuatanejo's sheltered bay where they were only about half as high. Local merchants enjoyed decent sales from the national tourists who brought some spending money with them. It seems that quite a few middle-class Mexicans were in town this weekend. They're the tourists we need the most.
The tourists became scarce in Zihuatanejo after la comida y la siesta. This evening there were few people along the waterfront. Most restaurants were empty or closed. Many closed simply because it's a national holiday and they have to pay their workers extra. Since many of our weekend visitors left today, it wasn't worth paying the extra money. We've got Semana Santa coming at the end of the month from March 30th until April 10th. We often get a small boost the weekend before Semana Santa by the folks who have to work during the Semana Santa vacation period. After that we have one long weekend for Día del Trabajador on May 1st, then it's the long slow season until summer vacation starts on July 15th.
Tucked away on a quiet street in La Madera neighborhood is the lovely vacation inn, Villa Cruz del Mar. A colonial-style home converted into a small family-run vacation inn featuring 12 comfortable air-conditioned rooms, some with kitchenettes, all with cable TV, surrounding an enclosed garden courtyard with a pool. Free wireless internet access and secure parking. Located less than 100 yards from the beach and within easy walking distance of numerous excellent restaurants.
