Calles VaZIHas pero Playas Aborrotadas
There wasn't much "coolishness" this morning. It was pleasant enough for a stroll, but going to the Mercado Municipal and back I was empapado by the time we got home with our goodies. While the streets were mostly empty, when we got there around 7:30 A.M. the market was filling up quickly with folks looking for delicious affordable breakfasts. Quite a few visitors always find their way there because they know such markets always have good food and hot coffee early. A drag most of the little restaurants are still having to operate in the street with the rains practically here and the heat unbearable during much of the day. Not sure why it's taking the municipal government so long to finish the "remodeling" work.
Beaches everywhere in Zihuatanejo-Ixtapa, Troncones, Barra de Potosí, and the rest of the Costa Grande were jam-packed today. There wasn't room for another soul. Many visitors brought their own umbrellas, chairs, food, and drinks. There were simply too many people for the so-called Eco-Guardians to be turning them all away. I don't believe the visitor limit was being enforced at Playa Las Gatas today, which is a shame for what's left of the coral and marine life there.
Later in the week there's a chance for some better waves for surfers, but practically the only waves in Zihuatanejo's bay today were from the balmy breeze. But it was still hot.
There's a big fiesta quinceañera at Casa Arcadia restaurant this evening. The quinceañera was posing for photos for hours in her huge chiffon dress. It looked hot, but she was dealing with it as guests continued arriving. Gonna be a real wing ding! I'm surprised at the selection of music. Lots of 60's and 70's stuff, as if the party was planned by the grandparents. Cool with me.
Despite the crowds, local merchants didn't seem to be making many sales today. Ten-peso souvenirs were about the extent of their shopping budget for many of our visitors. Not like other tourist destinations I've lived where visitors are often seen making their way around town with shopping bags from different stores. That used to be a thing here a couple of decades ago, but not lately.
At the pier it was a madhouse this evening as all the larger charter yachts seemed to return at the same time and have to take turns disembarking their passengers. A shame to see no officials from the Capitanía keeping things safe and orderly
There was a boxing exhibition at the Cancha Municipal this evening that drew quite a crowd. I'm not a big fan of the sport, but it looked well organized, and they were at least wearing safety gear on their heads.
Since schools are closed next Tuesday for Cinco de Mayo, some families will take Monday off as well, so we could see our long vacation weekend extended by a couple of days. This could be interesting.
How 'bout dat Kentucky Derby?
For a totally relaxing Bed & Breakfast lodging overlooking the remaining jungle in La Ropa, I highly recommend a hidden gem called Casa Arcoíris. The view of the sunset over the treetops from their pool is breathtaking, and the peace and quiet will relieve you of any stress. Five comfortable suites with air conditioning, TV, and Wi-Fi access at this LGBTQ-friendly lodging make it somewhat exclusive and definitely enchanting. Mention ZihuaRob's and get a discount.
