Se Van Los ViZIHtantes
Those luscious cool mornings we enjoyed for the past several months are over, and the heat is on. We still sleep with our windows open and the fans on, as much to enjoy the lovely sound of the ocean as for acclimating to the summertime weather. If we don't, then the days simply feel even more intolerably hot, and suffering the heat is no way to live here. We've only had a few hot days so far this year. Usually the daytime highs are in the low-to-mid-30's Celsius. Quite comfortable, especially if there's a breeze. Today was a nice balmy day. Perfect for our latitude.
Zihuatanejo has emptied out considerably. The large groups of people that had been wandering the streets and beaches this weekend have mostly left, others will leave later this evening returning on the buses and the planes they arrived in. And life will return to "normal" this Monday as children return to school after having most of last week off.
Local merchants enjoyed some sales this weekend, especially from the visiting athletes and their families. Now comes a long slow period until the middle of July limited to weekend visitors who tend not to be big spenders. A time for tightening belts and living frugally. Some businesses will close temporarily, others permanently. It's a phenomenon that repeats itself every year.
We're concentrating on getting protection for our ocean-facing windows before the big storms get underway. One service that sells window protection wanted 50 thousand pesos per window. I had to laugh at such a ridiculous price. They apparently aren't looking to do much business with actual locals, just foreigners and out-of-towners with condos who mostly don't even live here.
I'm not sure why the municipal government still hasn't taken down the decorations from the Carnaval from 2 months ago. They look rather silly and out of place at this date.
They also appear to be taking their sweet time "remodeling" the Mercado Municipal. So many businesses are still in the street, and as I gazed into the Mercado this morning while buying goodies for breakfast, I was frankly quite surprised by the lack of progress. There are still parts where they haven't even started. The rains will ruin the merchandise and tools of many of those shopkeepers, but apparently the municipal government simply doesn't care. A damn shame!
If you aren't a fan of fútbol, you're in for a boring summer in Mexico.
If you want to pamper yourself and enjoy some of the finest accommodations at Playa La Ropa, check out Villa Carolina.
