Saturday mornings are always a joy in our home, and today was no exception. Ours is a home full of love, and we spoil ourselves a little more on the weekends because we all work so hard. Fresh coffee, fresh fruit and a wonderful homecooked breakfast for the four of us with fresh tortillas, fresh eggs with ham and salsa, and fresh homemade beans. Always a great way to start the day, and even more so on a Saturday morning.

While our heat spell continues with no rain in the forecast, we continue receiving weekenders from the inland cities. Mostly folks who arrive by car and by bus with coolers of food and drinks. But they're most welcome here, and we all enjoy seeing them have a good time even if we have to work. Their smiles and laughter help make up for the lack of purchases they make in our shops and restaurants. They're grateful to be here, and that counts a lot with us.

Not all of them are poor spenders. We get some middle- and upper-middle-class folks who spend a considerable amount of money, but we just don't get as many of them as we need to call our tourism economy sustainable. Which is why we also see so many businesses, especially restaurants, unable to stay open for very long. And that's a shame. We have so many excellent restaurants, but they're having a harder and harder time as we receive less and less affluent visitors.

I'm seeing more news about places cracking down on lodgings that operate via large online websites that I won't mention here, services that are displacing locals by driving up prices and attracting speculators who exacerbate the problem. Something that is also happening here. Tenerife. Madrid. Barcelona. Now Mexico City. Hopefully our local government will see the benefits of restricting the use of such services, services I've always been against myself simply because with one click not only does our region lose a potential client, but the whole country does. I at least try to keep readers of my website in the region. If they don't like one of my listings, at least they aren't a click away from Hawaii or the Caribbean or the Mediterranean or Florida.

Local captains are catching lots of fish. Come on down to the downtown waterfront early to get the best pick for the best prices. Or you could just go fishing.

[image]Whether you want to go sportfishing, whale watching, sightseeing or snorkeling, my friend Capitán Ramón Olea of the panga Oleaje offers an affordable adventure waiting to be enjoyed. Ramón knows all the local fishing and snorkeling spots as well as what else is worth seeing. His 24' covered panga doesn't offer much luxury, but his expertise in fishing and his local knowledge of our coast and its marine life is second to none! Ramón practices "catch and release" fishing when possible. (click to enlarge image)
