¡Feliz Día de la Marina NaZIHonal!
¡MUCHAS FELICIDADES A LOS HOMBRES Y LAS MUJERES DEL MAR EN HOY SU DÍA!
Huge waves continued through Sunday night and throughout Monday in Zihuatanejo's bay and along the coast. Amazingly the Travesía de la Bahía de Zihuatanejo swim event across the bay was held with around 150 swimmers. I was amazed at how fast the first swimmers crossed the bay. I saw them through my binoculars as they left the pier at Las Gatas while walking along the Paseo near Hotel Ávila. By the time we walked to the end of the pier, chatted a bit, and walked back, we decided to have another peak while passing La Porteña restaurant. We were surprised as we walked out on the beach to see the first 3 swimmers already arriving. That's when I snapped the photo below. Sorry I don't know their names. No local media reported the event correctly.
Playa Linda's poorly built and poorly located pier remained closed today due to the effects of the mar de fondo which continues pounding the open coast with waves of around 3 meters, and they're going to get even bigger next week: over 4 meters along the open ocean by next Tuesday! The pier in Zihuatanejo was barely usable today. Waves were washing well up into the debris of the stupidly destroyed building that used to be the offices of the Capitanía. The fishermen's area of Playa Principal is already mostly underwater, and the pangas are bunched up as high up the beach as they can get. I can't imagine what they're going to do next week when the waves get even higher. The waves were washing over parts of the Paseo del Pescador in front of the downtown area. Playa La Madera was unusable. The ocean is trying to reclaim the part of the beach that the last mayor stupidly paved over with cement. Beachfront restaurants and properties all up and down the coast are being affected.
We've also got an area of low pressure forming to the southeast of us along the coast that could present problems for us. Definitely something worth keeping an eye on, especially considering the warm water temperature of over 30°C.
Fishermen were still celebrating up and down the waterfront when we took our evening stroll. I expect the celebrations will last well into the wee hours or until the beer runs out. ¡Salud!
