Zihuatanejo is extremely sad, disappointed and outraged at the violence that occurred Thursday night on Calle Agustín Ramírez when a local woman was shot to death and a man was seriously wounded just before 8PM in front of dozens of visitors and locals. No one was apprehended. Just a few days ago our mayor was bragging about how safe Zihuatanejo-Ixtapa was with a special detachment of hundreds of elements of the Guardia Nacional, the Marina, the Ejército, and the Policía Estatal in the municipio to guarantee security for our visitors for the holidays. Apparently it was nothing but empty words and another photo op. The mayor's competency and personal integrity were already under scrutiny after the recent murder of ecological reporter Alex Serna who had investigated and documented alleged corruption and unlawful practices related to the local environment in which the mayor, her husband and their family's business are involved. This latest incident of violence, added to the almost daily shootings about which the municipal government rarely if ever comments, underscore an old problem that her government and the Guerrero state government seem all too complacent about, if not at times complicit, as in the case of Alex Serna. We cannot tolerate elected representatives in Zihuatanejo who only simulate, if not shirk altogether, their duty to provide public security. I wish it wasn't necessary to report this, but I feel it's my duty to do so and to be frank with my readers.

Last night's forecasted rains never showed up, though this Friday morning storm clouds were visible on the ocean's horizon. The humidity and high temperatures once again made the day quite a scorcher, but it didn't seem to affect our visitors who filled our beaches and hotel pools as well as beachfront restaurants. Downtown shopkeepers enjoyed decent sales, though Ixtapa's shopping centers can't say the same. People with a little spending money are arriving and spreading their business around, much to the pleasure of local business owners. However, last night's incident is certain to cause cancellations in the short and long term. No doubt about it.

We enjoyed delicious bolillos rellenos con barbacoa de puerco that we bought at the mercado this Friday morning. I can't help myself and I always get a chile or two on mine. Not for the feint of heart, sensitive tongues or delicate behinds. But they are SO delicious!

Rains are forecast again for this Friday night and Saturday as Tormenta Tropical Genevieve passes by far off our coast where it's expected to become a hurricane this Saturday while it heads northwestward. It's certain to kick up waves in addition to the mar de fondo already expected this weekend, so it could get rough for beachgoers and boaters and cause some coastal erosion.

I'm not happy to report that the ecocide at the pier is now looking like a small hill is being built, something that wasn't in the original plans. There are a handful of trees left from the over a dozen that used to be there, but the remaining trees are obviously doomed due to the height of the earthen structure now appearing there. Too bad we don't have any real reporters to keep us informed of the details or municipal regidores (like city councilmembers) to provide real oversight. It looks like millions of our tax pesos are simply being wasted for a whim of the mayor's for something we don't need. Bummer. The mayor continues to pave paradise and to make a profit in the process.
