A thunderous and heavy rainstorm with some incredible lightning hit our coast overnight during the wee hours of this Monday. A lot of people didn't get much sleep last night. It was still drizzling at dawn but stopped around 7AM. One lightning bolt struck a condo's palapa at Playa Blanca and set it ablaze. There was some minor damage around town from the storm and a lot of garbage on the beach this morning as there always is after any significant rain.
The mar de fondo swells picked back up today. They continue washing high on the beaches, entering some beachfront restaurants and generally causing beach erosion. It's expected to continue for at least another day and a half.
People were swimming in Zihuatanejo's bay today when there should've been warning signs advising of the health risk after last night's deluge. Nowhere near any human population centers should you swim in the ocean after a heavy rain. Especially here where we have hillsides of dwellings without plumbing.
Tourism seems to have dropped off considerably since Saturday. Sales were extremely sluggish in downtown Zihuatanejo, but apparently Playa Las Gatas was busy. The condition of the entrance to the pier is dangerous with a wooden gangplank at the pier's entrance balanced on shifting rocks and getting battered by large swells. Still no lights at the pier. The shameful and possibly illegal construction project that no one asked for or wants continues.
Located near a popular surfing spot at Playa Manzanillo in Troncones, Casa Maya features four one-bedroom bungalow suites with A/C, each one a work of art using handcrafted local designs and materials. They share a large palapa that functions as a living area with a bar and kitchen in front of a pool overlooking the beach. The perfect lodging for a perfect vacation. (click to enlarge photo)
