We enjoyed another night of perfect sleeping weather and awoke to clear skies and calm seas. The local fishermen enjoyed a bountiful overnight catch, and the fishermen's market on Playa Principal was a busy place this Tuesday morning.

Apparently the mayor has decided that the pier's entrance needed a lookout point, a mirador, so that's why a multi-million-peso hill is being built there that blocks everyone's views from all around. I've seen a lot of really and truly STUPID public projects in my lifetime here and elsewhere, but this one wins the top prize. If we had a mayoral candidate who would run on undoing all the nonsense of this and the past municipal administrations, they would win in a landslide. We want our trees, beaches and VIEWS back! The damn excessive use of new cement everywhere has made an already hotter-than-normal summer even more unbearable.

While there are plenty of visitors here filling our beaches and many waterfront restaurants (since there's almost nowhere else to sit at too many beaches), sales have still been slow in downtown Zihuatanejo and in Ixtapa's recently remodeled shopping centers. I guess all the new cement there didn't attract any new customers after all, though that's what the mayor promised them when she undertook her recent "remodeling" project there. The problem remains the lack of targeted advertising to attract visitors who have spending money to keep our local businesses prosperous.

We were surprised to see absolutely NO ONE at any of the local bars on Calle Agustín Ramírez this evening where there are usually dozens of foreigners hanging out. Their favorite hangouts were all empty. We're very sorry to see this, but we understand it's a result of the lack of attention to a problem by the municipal government. If only we could distract them from their favorite project of pouring cement, but it seems more and more like a lost cause. Thousands of locals feel the same way as you.

Although rain remains in the forecast for this Wednesday, I expect it will be just another picture-postcard-perfect day in paradise. B-)

It is heartbreaking and ridiculous what is happening to Zihuatanejo. There are plenty of restaurants that have a great view of the bay. Unfortunately, Zihuatanejo seems to be in the hands of a selfish, narcissist.

There doesn't appear to be anything supporting this hill of dirt. This plan has the same lack of space for sailfest and guitarfest activities with no way for people returning from fishing or Las Gatas to get to the parking lot or paseo unless they use the old pathway around the back side (like there used to be behind the Capitania). Unless something changes, that back pathway (which is still behind this dirt hill) will continue to be dark and smell like urine. Just my dos centavos.

It's a total disaster already. They had a meeting with some of the fishermen, and the atmosphere was tense and dark. The fishermen felt intimidated, like they shouldn't ask questions. They were told that a "mirador" is being built. They weren't asked for input or approval. No transparency. Just intimidation. What was left unsaid is that what happened to the ecologist reporter Alex Serna was a warning to others. No one felt comfortable bringing the matter up. That's our municipal government today. Remember, we're one of the last bastions of the PRI in Guerrero, though their caciques and their mafias continue running much of the state.

This morning I saw that the tamarindo and guamúchil trees along the remaining walkway to the pier had their roots cut and that more river rock, allegedly taken illegally from Río Salitrera, is being used as a base fill material there, just as they were used for the rest of the hill they made there.

Major ECOCIDE. Because all pier entrances must have a lookout hill, right? I've lived in a lot of coastal towns and visited countless others, and I've never seen any with a lookout hill at the entrance to any pier. People are being told it's necessary because Zihuatanejo must grow, and this will attract more tourists. Some people actually believe this kind of simpleton BS. A stairway to the top of the building they unnecessarily tore down would've offered the same view. I've never seen such a totally unnecessary public project as this. This one is the top of the list for a useless and stupid waste of public resources to pad the greedy pockets of politicians.
