Zihua Todo Incluido (English version)
Todo Incluido Zihua is a local all-inclusive meal program designed to help independent hotels and restaurants compete with large resort packages while keeping more tourism spending inside Zihuatanejo’s local economy.
One of the biggest challenges for Zihuatanejo’s local tourism industry is that large corporate chain hotels in Ixtapa, and to a lesser extent in Zihuatanejo, can use all-inclusive packages to keep guests inside their properties. Those hotels do create jobs, but much of the visitor spending stays within the resort instead of reaching local restaurants, activities, and businesses. As a result, independent business owners lose potential customers. As a result, Ixtapa has struggled to build a flourishing commercial area, and Zihuatanejo does not receive the full economic benefit of the visitors who come here.
With that problem in mind, I have developed an all-inclusive meal program made up of local hotels and restaurants. Local hotels can sell guests a meal package at the time of booking. Instead of keeping guests inside one property, the package gives them credits they can use at participating local restaurants. Guests present a code at the restaurant, the restaurant redeems the credits, and the corresponding hotel reimburses the restaurant. Each restaurant offers a selected menu that fits the program’s predetermined pricing, and hotels transfer funds to restaurants within 24 hours after the credits are redeemed.
The program is supported by a website I have developed to manage sales, redemption, reimbursement, and guest transparency. Public visitors can see participating hotels, compare hotel options, view participating restaurants, and review the menu each restaurant offers through the meal package. Hotels can issue unique credits to their guests, and restaurants can redeem those credits by scanning a guest code or looking up the guest by phone number or name. For verification, the restaurant can view the guest’s photo, confirm the available credits, enter the credits used for that meal, and upload a photo of the guests present. Hotels can then review the credits used by their guests and make the required transfer to the restaurant. The goal is to help travelers budget their food costs in advance while still enjoying Zihuatanejo’s local restaurant options.
For hotels, the program creates a way to offer an all-inclusive-style option without operating a full restaurant program in-house and therefore attracting guests who may not have previously considered them. For restaurants, it brings prepaid guests through the door and creates a predictable reimbursement process. For guests, it offers the budgeting comfort of an all-inclusive package while encouraging them to explore local restaurants and the community.
This program is not yet live, and a small group of local businesses is working to launch it. I am looking for local hotels and restaurants that want to join the initial phase. There is currently no charge to participate, and there is no contract obligation beyond honoring the information each business posts on the website. The current full package is priced at 1,100 pesos per day per guest and includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Restaurants are reimbursed at 250 pesos for breakfast, 350 pesos for lunch, and 500 pesos for dinner. We hope to expand the program later with additional package levels and possibly other types of local businesses, but we are starting with hotels and restaurants. If you own or manage a local hotel or restaurant and would like more information, please contact me. We are ready to move forward as soon as we have enough restaurants to cover all meals on all days.
