We live very close to the Catalina and are on the beach every day. It's fine. Don't be stupid, meaning don't walk around in non tourist areas in the dark with expensive jewelry and buy drugs. After dark a taxi is always good.
Come visit and enjoy our wonderful place.

It's great. Seasonal high tides, the south end has a lot of rocks due to the new walkway. An ecological disaster.

Way more cautious when we travel to New Orleans or Las Vegas compared to Zihuatanejo. Every June we stay in a condo above Catalina, walk by it all the time during the day (good exercise). The only thing I worry about in Zihuatanejo is the sun. Getting out is the best part of a trip to Zihuatanejo, so many friendly people.

My wife and I walk everywhere. We don't own a car and we try to avoid taking (for us) expensive taxis. In that respect, it's the same Zihuatanejo as always. I don't know why you would avoid coming into downtown Zihuatanejo. It's our home and we love it. It's extremely rare for tourists or anyone to get robbed here. What crime we do have almost never involves our visitors unless they leave things that look valuable in their cars when they go to the beach or shopping, like anywhere.

Ah, ha! Therein lies the danger! We get used to moderate earthquakes of 3 or 4. However, this lulls the average person into thinking, "Well, that was a 4 and it wasn't too bad. An 8 must be about twice as large, right?"
WRONG! Most people simply don't understand logarithms. Every unit is 10 times larger than the previous unit. An 8 is not twice as large as a 4. It is 10 to the fourth power times as large, or 10,000 times as more powerful. If I were king of the world, logaritms would be required to come with warning labels when used in the general public.
The State of California spends a small fortune doing its best to help people prepare for the Big One. And virtually no one pays any heed to their protestations. Almost no one lifts a finger to prepare. How much water do you have stored? Flashlights and batteries? Emergency radio? Have you investigated your home for potential earthquake proofing techniques? Sure. Right.
One of the most effective and cheapest things you can do to prepare is to place an old pair of tennies under your bed. Huh? Why? An earthquake strikes in the middle of the night. People jump out of bed and run to check on the kids or the pets or just try to get themselves out of the building. What's wrong with this strategy? There is broken glass scattered about from broken windows and whatever dishes and vases were not secured. The ERs are then filled with people with serious foot lacerations.
But this begs the question, "When is the Big One coming?" No one knows. It could be 500 years from now or it could be tomorrow. However, the scientific community believes there is only about a 7% chance of an 8 or greater earthquake in California in the next 30 years. That's not zero but it is still pretty low. So why worry? Because there is a 99% chance of a 6.7 or greater occuring in the next 30 years. And that is still a very dangerous earthquake.

Prior to moving here, we lived our lives in California, and have always done the shoe thing.
After attempting to stand through a couple of 6's here, one quickly realizes the power of mother nature.
Have you read all about the plates you are building your home on? Interesting reading.

When we were having our house built in Troncones it did not involve seismic engineers. I did the design. A local gringo was the project manager. We talked about the rebar and concrete.
I told him:
I know it is is a hurricane zone. I want it built to withstand the strongest hurricane we have had.
I know it is an earthquake zone. I want it built to withstand the strongest earthquake.
Then I said, “And if the earthquake happens during the hurricane, I want my house to be standing.”
He loaded up the rebar and the concrete.
About half way through the construction, a structural engineer happened to visit Troncones. The project manager took him to the site and told him what I had said. He was disappointed when the engineer told him that he was not building for a hurricane or earthquake. Then there project manager was relieved when the engineer told him, “You are building to survive a nuclear bomb.”

No. We were one of the first buyers with legal titles in Troncones. We could have “bought” earlier as ejido land but I wanted to buy more than a handshake. In June 1996, Dewey showed me the first legal title. I said we wanted to buy. We had the choice of pretty much any lot.
Back in 1996 I thought that the threats of climate change due to global warming would inevitably mean higher sea levels and increased risks due to erosion.
If I could see it way back then, it baffles me that some today still deny it but I remember two quotes.
“There is none so blind as he who refuses to see.”
and
“It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it.”
… Back on topic…
Everybody wanted a tide level lot with sand in front. I said I wanted a lot that had lava rocks in front of it and had a few metres of elevation.
I’m sitting pretty now.

I remember reading an article based on an interview with Drew Barrymore. She said she always slept naked.
Then there was a significant earthquake one night. She ran outside naked, then decided she would start wearing something to bed at night.

A large earthquake hit in Southern California in about 1970. I was in our front yard with my small dog in my arms when my mother ran out and suggested that I put on some clothes of "some description" and not entertain the neighborhood with my nudity.

looks like footware will be needed this season at least at the south end of La Ropa.
Sad to leave those barefoot days behind.

They both scare the bejeezus out of me, but this is my home, and being brave enough to live here goes with the territory. What surprises me are all the people who think they want to live here who don't speak Spanish and are naïve about the earthquakes, hurricanes, crocodiles, scorpions, dengue, and lack of anything remotely resembling a functional police force, modern healthcare, or emergency services.

Don’t fear dying. Fear never having lived.
You have chosen your paradise on earth, aware that there are inherent risks. I think of my late father-in-law in Vancouver who spent his whole life spending time, money, and emotional energy on earthquake preparedness. He died at almost 92, I suspect a bit disappointed that it didn’t happen so that he could say, “I told you to be prepared.”
