Fin de Semana MojadíZIHma
We awoke to a perfectly beautiful Saturday morning in downtown Zihuatanejo after an evening of mostly light rains. The pier was too muddy to visit this morning, but the tourists wanting to go to Playa Las Gatas had no other choice. A damn shame the municipal government does nothing but pour cement, cut down trees, plan parades and events, pose for photos, and expect us all to be happy and content. The pier project was totally unwanted and unnecessary, and its daily users as well as our visitors have been unnecessarily inconvenienced for over 6 months now with construction and NO LIGHTS at the pier in the evening. Never mind the horrendous WASTE OF OUR TAXES on something we don't need that they just "remodeled" less than 6 years ago when the mayor's husband was mayor.
This Saturday we were surprised to receive so many visitors. Mostly people from tour buses without much spending money, but they are all certainly welcome. The day was quite lovely in spite of the water in the bay being muddy from the overnight rains. Unfortunately it's obvious our visitors don't understand the health risk of swimming in the ocean here after a rain, and it's a shame no warning signs are posted as they are in other more responsible tourist destinations.
Around 6PM it started raining again, and the folks at Las Gatas couldn't get back to the pier fast enough to walk through the dark pier and the mud carrying their children, coolers, luggage, and all kinds of bags. Visitors on the downtown beach tried to tough it out, but the light rain quickly became a downpour. In Ixtapa, there was almost no beach to enjoy due to the high waves and erosion of the beach all the way up to the seawalls of the hotels. The rain is expected to continue through most of the night and much of this Sunday, part of a large area of tropical disturbance off our coast that is expected to develop within the next week.
Elton John is playing the second of two concerts tonight at Estadio Azteca (Estadio Banorte, but don't expect many people to call it that). Would've loved to have been there!
