We awoke to a cool rainy Thursday morning in Zihuatanejo. Quite refreshing actually. It rained most of the day, and it looks like it will continue raining here into Sunday as Hurricane Simon slowly gains strength and moves northward. It's expected to make landfall near Jalisco and move inland over Nayarit, Sonora and Durango. But another big swirly thing is forming up off the coast of Guatemala and Chiapas, and it looks like it'll be heading our way soon. Oh boy. :-(

Schools will be closed this Friday all along the Costa Grande and Acapulco. Acapulco has been suffering extreme flooding this Thursday. Lots of landslides, too, including along the Carretera Nacional 200, but as far as I know traffic is still getting through.

Most of the waterfront was closed up tight this evening. Waves washed over parts of the walkway at one point during the day. The pier remains an obscene mess with mud and no lighting, and the nearby parking lot is a mud pit, too. The port will remain closed this Friday, and we're expecting the waves to get larger. The coast along the open ocean continues suffering erosion.

The mayor says SEMARNAT will come and study the situation at La Ropa to see if moving all the rocks is a good idea. Gee, maybe they should've done an environmental impact study BEFORE they built the expensive dead-end road to Capricho del Rey.

At least we're getting some much-needed rain, and so far it's been a gentle rain in our area, so the damage isn't as bad as in other places where it's rained much heavier.

The bocote trees are coming into bloom, so parts of the hillsides that still have trees on them are turning white with their flowers.

Ah, the ocean is a dynamic creature, and as much as the US Army Corps of Engineers are problems, at least they do serious studies before breakwaters, jetties and the like are installed. It's all cause and effect.

The Capricho del Rey that was installed is an issue. It is causing the rocks in front of El Pirata, Rossy's, and at least El Marlin to have loads of rocks in front of them. They will likely be there forever, or get worse. The waves breaking INSIDE of La Gaviota? There is no hope.

Mother Nature is something that has been studied foreGATORver and needs to be respected and understood. Don't just build stuff in her arms.

Robb can you explain what is going on at La Ropa? Thank you

Way before the effects of El Niño or any other climatological source started sending us big waves, extreme tides, or rising waters, after the conclusion of the road project Capricho del Rey 2 years ago rocks began piling up in front of El Marlín and Rossy's. Before the "La Ropa" sign and that entire area were cemented in, that area used to be rocky. Now the waves crash into the cement there, and rocks that used to pile up there now move elsewhere. Usually at the end of the stormy season the sand would return and bury the rocks. That didn't happen during the past year, and the rockiness was already worse than ever in front of Rossy's before the hurricane season began. Apparently the mayor is confident in the results of SEMARNAT's study exonerating her husband's road project. If so, I would suspect a payoff has already been made. We all watched this disaster happen in slow motion. There is no doubt as to what the cause and effect are. The Capricho del Rey project had numerous ecological violations, but apparently they never did an environmental impact study called a Manifiesto de Impacto Ambiental (MIA) required by law, an omission that has apparently been a common practice with projects by the builder, the mayor's company. This was documented by Alex Serna before he was tortured and murdered. So apparently they simply paid the fines and continued the work. One of the violations documented was the placing of huge boulders and rocks 20 meters into the ocean from the coast, burying a fragile ecosystem home to seahorses, among other creatures. Those rocks changed the form of the waves and currents reaching the rest of Playa La Ropa, and that's how rocks arrived in front of Rossy's and El Marlin. The smooth black rocks on the beach aren't from the project itself. They've always been there, usually buried under the sand just off the shore from the beach. But their appearance and accumulation is a direct result of the project. SEMARNAT doesn't have the beach data prior to the project to compare it with the current data. They aren't from here. They haven't been observing this disaster occur in slow motion like we have. While I wish I could have confidence in their impartiality and professionalism, this is Guerrero where the federal government has never worked as it should, and I suspect the outcome is already known by the mayor or she wouldn't have made such an announcement in the local media, which is paid by the municipal government. This is in direct response to the claims made by Alex, me and others.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. It looks worse now in front of Rossy's than it did in March. I suspect there is no simple fix to this situation.

Friends of mine arrived yesterday for 3 months and stay within a block of the pier. She noted they could not reach the pier yet due to mud and that the parking lot was a mess. She also mentioned the natural beauty of Zihuatanejo is diminishing.
It is heartbreaking ...

Like you mentioned, those rocks are underneath the sand. No doubt the sand on La Ropa was made by those rocks and a few shells. It appears that the new nearly perpendicular wall in the south corner is rebounding the waves and increasing the wave energy going along La Ropa. Just enough energy to take out the sand and leave the rocks. Just an old rock hound's opinion. I'm glad they are looking into it. I've been coming to Zihua for over 30 years and I'll be surprised if I don't think it's beautiful again this year. Have a great day.
